We are traveling from Zurich to Florence, la specia, grindalwald and to Basel in that order. If We purchase a three country eurail travel pass can it be used in Italy between cities on the Italian trains? Would it be better to buy tickets separately?

If the rail pass includes Italy as one of the countries then of course you can use the pass in Italy.
It probably would be cheaper to purchase individual tickets rather than buy a rail pass.
Try this site to check to see which rate is better.

Hi judith68,

My opinion is that railpasses rarely make economical sense compared to buying point to point tickets if you plan in advance - in places like Italy you can get tickets super cheap tickets 90 days or so ahead of travel. Also, for the most part the pass only covers travel on regional, slower trains for high speed trains you'll have to pay a reservation fee. I think passes make sense if a) you plan to do a lot of travel and b) you don't mind taking slower local trains as opposed to high speed connections and c) you have time and want fkexibility. Personally I would rather see fewer places, and forgo a railpass in favour of a planned itinerary. Okay, not so spontaneous but IME cheaper and more relaxing overall. Happy railing
