Train Ticket Valid For Next Train if I miss it?

I'm staying outside of Venice in Mogliano Veneto...my train arrives in Venice (Santa Lucia) tonight at 8 PM, and the train to Mogliano Veneto leaves at 8:04 PM.

First, do I have any chance of making the 8:04 train? Secondly, if I buy the ticket for the 8:04 and miss it, can I use that ticket on the next train, which is 45 minutes later? I really don't want to have to wait the 45 minutes if I can make the train but I'm realistically not sure as I've never been to Venice.

Thanks in advance for your help.

It's a »Regionale« train without seat reservation or a discounted ticket. Shouldn't be a problem. And if that helps for your peace of mind, buy a ticket at one of those machines. It sets you back EUR 2,50.

Surely your train stops at Mestre 10 mins earlier?

If so, get off there: the 2004 from Santa Lucia leaves Mestre at 2016. Indeed, you'll probably be in time to catch the 1959.

Though Santa Lucia's small and easy to get around, finding the platform and getting to it will probably be tricky in 4 mins -and virtually impossible if you need to buy a ticket as well. Your incoming train almost certainly CAN'T arrive early, as it has to leave Mestre on time.

Thanks so much for the advice, I checked and my train does indeed stop at Mestre and I have 11 minutes to change which seems much more manageable...the ticket is showing as available to purchase on Captain Train (fantastic app, by the way)...can I go ahead and purchase it and just show it to them on my phone there, or do I have to have a paper copy of the ticket? Thanks so much.

The copy on the phone should be fine. I always print a copy as insurance.

Note that you can use the ticket on the earlier train if you should arrive in time to catch it.

Usually I advise against the purchase of regional tickets online, because the conditions are much more rigid than for tickets bought in the station: they must be used within two hours of the stated time, and can't be exchanged or refunded for any reason. However, when they're bought in conjunction with a ticket on a reserved train, the window is extended if that train is late.

If you are taking a train from Milan to Venice (you didn't say where you depart from originally), you could just buy a ticket for Venice/Mogliano while in the Milan train station. The cost is 1.75€. Otherwise, you can buy it on the Trenitalia website 7 days in advance. I'm not sure why you would want to use a reseller (Captain Train?) instead of a direct purchase. If you are traveling around Italy before heading to Venice, you can buy the Mogliano ticket at any train station or store with the Trenitalia logo.

Trenitalia has their own app.

Thanks for everyone's help, I actually was coming from Florence, I bought the ticket in advance for Mogliano Veneto, got off in Mestre, and easily made my 10 minute connection, as the train was only the next platform over.

New question, from Mogliano Veneto, I have an early flight on Monday morning from Marco Polo airport. I was advised by who I am staying with to take the train to Mestre and then bus to Marco Polo?

I was looking at Mogliano-Mestre 5:11-5:31, it says Bus VE111...is that a bus or a train? Once I arrive in Mestre, do buses for Marco Polo depart right outside of the station or where would I need to go for that?

Thanks in advance for the continued help.
