Train ticket: London to Liverpool

I've been trying to purchase a train ticket via thetrainline.com for a round trip ticket from London to Liverpool to do a Beatles memory trip. (Magical Mystery tour)etc. I'm finding 104 pound for two. $188 US. Tours will take us including the tour for 75 GBP per person which makes me think there must be a much cheaper ticket out there. I'm not getting the "saturday day out" option which is very cheap 42 GBP for two (I think} I wonder if any one knows if I am trying to book too early. I'm trying to book for July 24 and I thought the window was 8 weeks.
The Saturday Day Out option says I must travel both ways on Saturday (which I'm trying to do) and I have to book before 1800 the day before travel.

in fact it says this:These are standard class tickets. They are available on Virgin services, for same day return travel on Saturdays only.

TRAIN OPERATOR Virgin Trains

BOOKING DEADLINES Tickets must be booked by 18:00 on the day before the day of travel. Seat reservations are compulsory on the outward leg of the journey and are recommended (although not compulsory) on the return leg

Does anyone know how to get one of these Saturday Day out prices or some of the other "value" offers?

The day in question, Saturday July 24, is the first day of English and Welsh school holiday and is very busy on the trains. Train companies, like airlines, practise yield management and withdraw bargain tickets on busy days and often the cheapest ticket available is saver return, at £52.10 per person. I doubt very much you get anything cheaper. I wouldn't take a coach (bus) trip which, while cheaper, will be snarled up in heavy traffic that day and will take longer than 5 hours or so normally quoted.

i recommend going by bus because you will save a heap.

check out www.nationalexpress.com or www.megasbus.com and they have fares quit often for as low as £1.00.

it's not as comfortable as a train, but for a one hours bus ride it shouldn't be too much of a hassle.

ppgan:

No form of transport - not even VLM's rip off planes - can get you from London to Liverpool in an hour. As Alec says, you'll be damn lucky if the bus takes only the scheduled 5 hours (7 and a half last time I took it).

And you'll be luckier still to get a National Express Funfare at weekends.

Thanks for the replies. I think, in view of the timing, that Liverpool might not be a good idea for a day trip this time. I will be driving near Liverpool later in our trip but the day begins in Oban and ends at Ruthin's castle for dinner and overnight stay. I didn't think we could fit a stop to Liverpool enroute. I'm going to post another general question about that itinerary since it's rather buried in this title.
You all give great information. Thank you so much.
