Train stopover on way to Berlin-Cologne cathedral-how much time to allow?

We are a party of 6 adults traveling by train from Bingen, Germany (on the Rhine River) to Berlin in one day. However, we want to make a stop in Cologne, store our bags at the train station, and find transportation to go tour the Cathedral.

How much of a "layover" should we allow? Suggestions for transporation to the Cathedral, or is it near enough the train station?

We will leave Bingen fairly early, and hope to arrive in Berlin between 6 and 8 p.m.
