Train or bus?

My husband and I are flying into Paris and eventually want to get to Slovenia and Croatia, I was thinking we could take easy jet to ljublijana then train or bus it from there and eventually end up in Dubrovnik, from there we have to get to rome. We are from Canada and have travelled Europe on a eurail unlimited pass and loved it!! What could anyone recommend for travel in slov/Croatia? I guess we would be open to renting a car but I don't want the hassle of worrying about it. Any thoughts? It's around 650 cnd for an unlimited euroail pass per person.
