Train from York to London

We will need one-way tickets from York to London on Sunday, 22 September 2013. I have checked fares and they range from £103.00 to £194.00 for both of us. Does that sound about right? We live in the mountains in Colorado so I'm not very familiar with train travel, but wow, that sounds pricey. Thanks.

Www.nationalrail.co.uk will give you prices. The earlier you book the cheaper the tickets generally are. Not sure what site you are looking at but check the above for prices.

Cheaper advance purchase tickets for a specified journey date/time are released no more than 3 months beforehand. They are currently available for journeys up to 1st September, so if you wait a couple of weeks you will find cheaper tickets. Try using the site jamikins mentions and putting in closer dates for examples of what you could pay. Eg leaving York at 10:51 on 4th August you would pay £58 in 2nd class or £80 in 1st class.

Personally, I try to avoid train travel on Sundays, as that's when the majority of line work is done and you run the risk of having to change to a bus for part of the journey.

This is the site you need - www.eastcoast.co.uk

On the right of the screen you'll see fares on sale for up to 8 September. Keep checking until your date becomes available or set up an email alert.

Fares from £13.

Don't buy your ticket from theTrainline, a reseller who will add a fee, but from East Coast or www.virgintrains.co.uk - the latter site is known to work with US credit cards (you collect your tickets at a fast ticket machine before your journey - you need the card used and booking reference. Specify York as the ticket collecting station).
