Train from Venice to Rome

Jump to last reply

I'm looking to travel with my family from Venice to Rome at the beginning of May and I was wondering what the recommended method of travel is? My mother is considering air travel but we are concerned that both the Venice and Rome airports are far from downtown (thus incurring expensive taxi costs) and we haven't found any flights from any of the Italian low cost carriers or with Ryanair. We've also looked at trains - Trenitalia lists 2e class seats fro 76euro for adults, 38euro for children but I've also read on a 2010 Fodor's thead that it's cheaper to buy the tickets the day of in the station? Is that true? We are trying to travel on a budget. Is it cheaper to buy now online or cheaper to wait and buy it once we're there?
