train from Sorrento to Rome
Hello! We'll be in Sorrento next week and will be traveling on to Rome via train. Is there any reason to make the ticket reservation/purchase in advance thru the website. Do prices change as the trip date gets nearer?

You need to take the local train to Naples and change there. No reason to buy tickets far in advance and there are many trains daily between Naples and Rome. But, you must reserve you seat (you can do it on the spot) for any except the slowest )every stop) trains.

For the local train, no as it's just a commuter type train without reserved seats (subway like). The train between Naples and Rome has some sale fares if you book in advance, but the prices don't increase from the regular fares as it gets closer to your travel time (it's not like plane fares). You can try to book discount tickets (Mini Fares)on Trenitalia.

Folks with time may prefer to take the fast boats between Sorrento and Naples - getting a nifty view of the coast an Mt Vesuvious en route rather than the rather IME really not very comfy commuter train with IME at times a rather dicey crowd with reports of thefts at times. Last time I took this train folks were actually shooting up in the rear of my compartment - while this is not nearly always the rule I think it did unnerve me a bit.

You've posted that for years. How long has it been? I've never seen anything like that on this train. It's usually full of tourists, people traveling to work and kids going to school/sports.

the last time was not that long ago - three years ago - perhaps it is long for you - why whitewash what is a problem with these trains - lots of reports of thefts - watch your bags. the Naples area unfortunately has a lot of poor down and out drug addicts - one of the highest concentrations in Europe. And of course you do not always see as a casual tourist all this. Be very careful of your bags on the CircumVesuviana commuter trains. and do not believe folks who think they know it all and base their views of infrequent trips on those trains - including moi!

have to agree with kybourne....circumvesuviana is ok. I used it for two autumn months last year nearly every second day... keep your valuables close, have a positive attitude and chat away with people sitting next to you. Drugs and theft is everywhere... no different than trains here in melbourne australia where I currently live..

Now you're putting me off Melbourne shmushma, and we use the trains there whenever we visit;-) Next trip July for King Tut. I am always hanging out for the next OS trip, but Melbourne is great. We live closer to Sydney, which for me is a HUGE problem.

madgicsh I wouldn't want to put anyone off coming to beautiful melbourne... I was just trying to say that the circumvesuviana train is just your average working class train like anywhere else in the world .. King Tut is a must see... I was lucky enough to visit the egyptian museum in Cairo and it was amazing. I can't believe the Tut has ended up in Melbourne!!! you definitely have to come

Taking the ferry is quite a hassle. First you would have to get from Sorrento down to the port (bus or taxi), ferry to Naples (they aren't as frequent as the train and early ferries book up days in advance sometimes), get a taxi from the port to the Naples train station and then catch the train. Not fun with luggage.
There is also the bus option from Sorrento to Rome (Marozzi or Curreri) if you can get up early (6 and 6:30 departures).

Stormygirl, are you going on a Sunday or a holiday? If you are, then train services will be fewer in number and you might have to wait for some time...! Check out the timings properly so that your trip is not delayed or you don't waste time.. On my trip to Rome my family received American airways promotional free airline tickets and the trip was awesome.. Which all places do you plan to visit?? Are you going alone or with family? Always visit places like this with a group - family or friends..

Hi Amy, we are going to Rome on Thursday so it seems there will be lots of trains running, thanks for that heads up though.
My husband and I are going to be in the Sorrento area on our own and then meeting friends in Rome before boarding a Windstar cruise up the Riviera and into France. We are looking forward to it!
