Train from SMN Firenze to Pisa Airport
I need to ensure that I will be at the Pisa Airport by 10:45 AM the last day of my trip (on a Tuesday morning). Which train do you suggest for me to take from the S. M. N. Firenze station? Also, should I purchase this ticket in advance or the morning of?

I don't know when you are doing this.
Until Sept 2016, you route would be:
Train: Florence-Pisa Centrale
Bus/taxi: Pisa Centrale - Pisa Airport
The Pisa airport is only a mile from Pisa Centrale.
After Seot 2016, if they manage to complete the PisaMover project, http://www.pisa-airport.com/aeroporto_di_pisa_76.html
Train: Florence-Pisa Centrale
PisaMover train: Pisa Centrale - Pisa Airport
The price of the Florence-Pisa Centrale train ticket does not depend on when you buy them. It is the same price for Regionale trains. However, while I would buy ticket at a station, I would not wait until the morning of departure especially at Firenze SMN. While others may have experience always finding a machine available for walk up, I have also visited Florence SMN station when all the machines had clueless tourists trying to figure out how to buy tickets. The ticket windows can have enormous queues at this station.
The R train ticket can be used one time during two months period following the purchase by feeding the ticket into the validating machine before you get on - don't forget this step! You can buy Florence-Pisa Centrale ticket at any train station. When I happen to have time at other station and see no one using the machine, I just use that time to buy tickets for the upcoming trips. The payment accepted was not necessarily intuitive. I think it has to be a CHIP and PIN type of larger amount. For trivial amount, the ticket machine let me use a CHIP and signature card without any validation. For larger amount, only a real CHIP and PIN card worked. There are also machines that accept cash at stations. These are wider machines and have a slot for bill and coins as well as an icon of bills and coins at the top of the machine. However, these machines tend to be out of order often. Sometimes there are "friendly" helpers loitering machines I would rather want to stay away from. The time is your friend to find other machines or a ticket window as a last resort to buy your ticket.

It looks like Trenitalia takes you straight to the airport where the other trains take you to Pisa Centrale where you have to taxi or take a bus to the airport.
Is Trenitalia a safe bet considering I'm on a strict schedule that morning?

Thank you, Greg. My trip is planned in the beginning of June. From what you said, I believe it would be smartest to buy my ticket to Pisa Centrale when I actually arrive in Florence (seeing as how I am only spending a few days). This way, I will not be rushed the morning of. Then I would just take the bus from Pisa Centrale to the airport.
Once I do this, I would only have to validate it before I board the train...correct?

Trenitalia cannot bring you to the airport as the railway line from Pisa station to the airport has been decommissioned to build a people mover that is not ready at present.
A possible alternative to the train are the bus shuttles, run by two competing companies (Autostradale and Terravision) from the railway station in Florence to the Pisa airport. It takes about an hour - but it is better to leave early as there could be some traffic on the motorway; they leave from the gallery in front of the station (exit from the ticket office hall and turn right).

when I turned up on the day I was travelling back to Pisa to buy my ticket, there were long queues at the machines but none at all at the ticket windows so that's where I went.
I would not reckon on getting the bus all the way - we got bumped off the bus from Pisa to Florence because we'd bought the tickets at the wrong ticket desk!
you will need a bus for the short hop from Pisa Centrale to the airport but they should be easy to find just outside the station in Pisa,

If you need a ticket for regional trains, ask first to tobacconist in the station area. Or the parapharmacy on the side of via Alamanni stairs. They can print a ticket for you on the spot and they have no queue.
