train from Rome to Brindisi?

We are going to Chania, Greece and was wondering if i would be an interesting and/or fun trip to take a train from Rome to Brindisi and go from there. Is the train nice, are the views nice? I am traveling with 3 older teenagers and the two of us Mom's. My son and I have seen quite a bit of Italy, but nothing in that vicinity. my friends and her girls have never been to Europe. Just thought it might be more interesting that just flying Rome/Chania.
We have a way to get get to Chania from either rome or Brindisi, or even Bari..or any eastern coastal city with a small airport. Any information and opinions will be very helpful.
Going in mid-june 2013. Thanks much!
