train from Rome airport to Florence
I need some directions to use the train to go from the Rome airport to Florence. I will be traveling alone with a small suitcase. What airlines fly from Rome to Florence? Any opinions on which is easier? I am an experienced traveler, just not used to doing my own arrangements in the last few years.
Thanks.
Thanks.

Hi Amie,
The best way to get from Rome airport to Florence is to take the Leonardo da Vinci express train to Rome TE and the train to Florence SMN.
When you exit Customs at FCO, follow the train signs to the station. You can buy both your ticket to Rome and your ticket to Florence there.
You can also buy your ticket to Florence on line at www.trenitalia.com. Leave yourself 2 hr from scheduled landing to time your train leaves and you won't be disappointed.

ira: For clarity: Presume you mean 2 hours from the planned flight arrival until the Florence train leaves from Rome Termini...not 2 hours from planned flight arrival until express train leaves Fiumicino.

Amy-- you can take the FS airport train to Rome's Termini (Roma Termini) and then train from there to Florence (Firenze). There is a train departing to Florence from Roma Termini almost every 15 minutes. The trip length varies according to train line, obviously the Eurostar (ES) while more expensive it is faster. I don't see the pressing need to reserve ahead of time, unless you are bound by a very strict itinerary. Get to http://www.trenitalia.it/ and get familiar with trains/timetables.

The ES train from Rome Termini to Florence takes 1 h 36 minutes, if memory serves. It makes no stops between these cities.
Oddly enough, we sat for about 15 minutes in the suburban Florence station (Campo di Marzio, I think) before moving on to Florence SMN.
The express train takes under 30 minutes between the airport and the Termini station, FYI.
By the way, a suggestion for other travellers:
We have twice taken the non-express train -- the one that stops everywhere but Termini -- to get into Rome.
It was modern, clean, uncrowded, about as fast and (this is a tiny point) half the price.
Once, we wanted to alight at Trastevere station, which was a better staging point for reaching the Largo Arenula, whence we wandered over to our apartment.
This month -- because we had time to kill and because I would rather contend with a small station than a large one -- we took the same train to Ostiense, then the metro to Termini where we changed (underground, never entering the station) for P.zza di Spagna.
First-timers might be daunted. But I found it fun.
