Train from Porto to Lisbon - Anyone made this journey?

Hi,

I plan to take the train from Porto to Lisbon toward the end of my trip. I have reviewed the www.cp.pt site and it appears that there is only one IR train daily (except Sundays). It also looks like it leaves shortly after midnight...

Has anyone made this trip? I'm not sure if I'm reading the timetable correctly. Is it really a red-eye? If so, is it possible to sleep or is it really bumpy? I've heard some trains in Portugal are pretty rough...

Thanks in advance for any advice...

Yes. There are hourly trains Lisboa-Porto - 3 h 20 min via the AP (Alfa Pendular) "tilting" express trains or 3 h 40 min by IC, slightly slower and cheaper trains. there are also IR (Interregional) snail trains that take about 5 hours. AP and IC are modern trains - IR like something out of Europe in the 50s. the IR train after midnight is probably such a monster, a night train with just regular seats.

Thanks PalQ...looks like some good info. Its reassuring that I have alternatives to the IR "midnight not-so-express". I had seen the Alfa Pendular tab but for some reason never checked it out...

Glad you brought that to my attention. Thanks!

I took an Alfa Peninsular: dep. Porto about 5:30 PM, arr. Lisbon (Oriente) 8:45 PM. Got off at Oriente because that was on the Metro line to where I was going. The train terminates at Santa Apolonia. It was a comfortable ride!
