We need to get from Orvieto to Rome on 24th December and thought we would take the train. I had been planning on a train arriving in Rome around 1:15pm as the Trenitalia website has been showing several trains a day between Orvieto and Rome on a Thursday. I now find the website shows multiple trains every Thursday until 10th December, and on Thursdays after that only a single train arriving in Rome at 9:05am. Do they run less trains because it is winter, holidays etc, or has there just been a timetable change? I am just wondering (a) if more trains will show in a couple of weeks (ie, how far out is the schedule accurate?) and (b) if there is only one train on Christmas Eve should I be booking seats now, or can I wait until we get to Italy on 5th December? (By the way, I had been planning the 1pm arrival in Rome to tie in with the tiem our apartment will be ready for us).
Thanks for any help.

The new schedule for after December 15 has not yet been posted on the Trenitalia website. They are very lax about posting new schedules. Use current Thursday schedules for now.
Yes, it is because the new train schedules have not been uploaded yet. Same happened to us when we were trying to find trains for our trip.
The new schedule goes into effect on December 13. Regional train schedules (most of the trains from Orvieto to Rome are regional trains) are often only posted about a week before the schedule change.
As suggested, use the present schedule for planning; schedules do not normally change by more than a few minutes. December 24 is not a holiday; trains will be running on the normal daily schedule.
Thanks everyone - you are always a wealth of knowledge!
HINT: Between Orvieto and Rome, take the more frequent "Regionale" train instead of the slightly faster "Intercity" ("IC") train, which costs nearly double. Travel time: 67 minutes on the IC, 81 minutes on the Regionale. Fare: 7.10 Euros on the Regionale; 13 Euros on the IC.
BUT ..... there are no seat reservations on the Regionale, so there is a very slight chance you may need to stand. Seats on the IC train are all reserved.
