Dear All - I'm planning a Christmas market holiday - (1 traveler - me) - I will fly in to Nuremberg, spending a few days in Germany ( Nuremberg, Regensberg, Rothenberg ob der Tauber by train), I would like to spend a few days in Vienna and fly back to the US from Vienna. I need a flight from Nuremberg to Vienna - Air Berlin charges around $100 one-way for a 1 hour trip. One-way train is 93 Euros and takes around 5 hours.
My questions:
1. Would you take the train or the plane? 5 hours on a train seems like a lot, but - if the scenery is pretty - even in the winter - it is worth it - part of the vacation, I like trains, especially if they are clean and the scenery is pretty - rather than the hassle of going into an airport, taking a train from the Vienna airport into Vienna.
2. If I end up flying, I will purchase my airline ticket now. If I decide to take the train instead, should I book my ticket now? I think once purchased, I will not be able to change the time or date.
3. What is the best website to purchase the train ticket?
Thank you so much!

I assume you have checked sites such as whichbudget.com and skyscanner.net for budget flights Please remember that your total travel time and costs by air should include
the time and cost to get to and from airports
the cost of seat selection and any luggage fees
that 1 hour flight is going to take more than 1 hour, believe me, when all is said and done
the scenery between Nurnberg and Vienna is not spectacular IMO but the train can be a very relaxing way to travel between these two cities especially if you are willing to use ICE services vs. slower regional services.

If you take a train, why Nuremberg-Vienna? The ICE train from Nuremberg to Vienna stops at Regensb'u'rg one hour later on the way to Viwnna. So, if you do Regensburg last, then your train trip would be Regensburg-Vienna Westbahnhof which is less than 4 hours.
Dukey1 and Greg, thank you - this information is very helpful. I will only have a carry-on, so luggage is not much of an issue, but I prefer the train over airport hassle. Thanks for the tip on taking the train from Regensberg, Greg.
One more question - should I purchase my ticket now - in the US - before leaving for Europe (in mid Dec)? If the price is pretty much the same, and the tickets aren't 'sold out' - I should be able to buy the ticket just before I make the rail journey. Right?
