Train from Lyon, France as part of flight purchase and cheaper than flight from Paris!

In April I am flying to London and home from France. In researching flights home, I looked into flying out of Lyon or taking the TGV train to Paris and flying out of CDG. Wow!
Orbitz booked me on AA including the train (booked as a United Airways flight) from Lyon to CDG.
This was the cheapest way home and more than $200 cheaper than flying directly out of Paris (on the exact same AA flight), not to mention the cost of booking my own train to get to Paris.
Travelocity, Kayak and AA web sites did not offer this alternative.
So, if you are thinking of taking a train to CDG to catch a flight, try booking through Orbitz from a different French city.

I also posted this on the airlines forum but thought this info might be useful to those planning a trip to France.

Good for you, Su.

Thanks for sharing.

With the savings in airfar, you could spend a night in Paris.

Good for you if this works out, and I hope it will for your sakes. But Orbitz and these kinds of "creative"' deals make me skeptical until it is a proven done deal and you're home. That TGV train trip under a United airlines flight code feeding an AA flight out of Paris? I wonder. Could you please post when you get home?
Bon voyage, I hope it all works out when the rubber meets the road, or the rails, or the runway...

If you use these "airport codes" when researching flights to/from cities in France, there are many possibilities of combining rail with air travel:

XDB Lille-Europe Railway Station, Lille, France
XHK Valence TGV Railway Station, Valence, France
XOP Poitiers Railway Station, Poitiers, France
XPJ Montpellier Railway Station, Montpellier, France
XRF Marseille Railway Station, Marseille, France
XSH Tours Saint-Pierre-des-Corps Railway Station, Tours, France
XYD Lyon Part-Dieu Railway Station, Lyon, France
XZN Avignon TGV Railway Station, Avignon, France
ZYR Brussels Midi Railway Station, Brussels, Belgium
QXB - Aix-en-Provence Railway Station, Aix en Provence , France
