Train from London to Leeds and from York to London

Train from London to Leeds and from York to London
I plan to take the train from London to Leeds, stay there for a few nights, take the train to York, stay there for a few nights, and then take the train back to London. Do I need to buy tickets in advance? Any other tips would also be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

tickets will be cheaper if you buy in advance. Generally 12 weeks in advance gets the best discounted fares and then gradually the cheaper fares sell out until you are paying full 'walk up' fares.

That's sort of accurate. On most routes, with most operators, most of the year, advance booking discounts are available till around 1800 the night before. They're usually less aggressive discounts by then - but rarely very much less discounted. "12 weeks" isn't a fixed rule.
London-York is more likely to be an exception to this than most routes and it's wisest to book as early as possible. If, 12 weeks prior, no discounts are being shown at nationalrail.co.uk, wait a few days as they're sometimes posted late.
Leeds-London is pretty typical, though even there discounts can sell out completely quite quickly at peak travel times, like Xmas. For an idea of how it works, try some dummy bookings 12-9 weeks out at the National Rail site.

If booking 11+ weeks ahead, do not buy until you see Advance fares have appeared (there's a gap of a week or so when Off-Peak and Anytime fares can be sold as they can be sold without reservations, but cheap Advance fares cannot be sold until reservations open as they are based on a quota at each price level in the system - impatient people can get stung!)
On the day you'll pay the unlimited-availability Off-Peak or megabucks Anytime fares.
