Train from Inverness to London?
We'll be traveling in U.K. in July 1998. We plan on going from Inverness (actually we'll be staying in Aviemore) to London. Would love to get info on train travel for that trip. Is it more economical than flying? Any comments will be appreciated.

I believe high-speed, non-local trains run from Inverness to London either via Glasgow or Edinburgh.
You should plan on obtaining a Thomas Cook train timetable guide (avail. from major book stores or by calling Forsyth Travel [#800 listing, for ex.]) to get more details about types of trains, trip duration, city stops, etc.

A sleeping car train with buffet car leaves Inverness at 2030 (not Saturdays) and arrives at London Euston at 0747: you must leave the train by 0730. A restaurant car through train leaves Inverness at 0750 Mondays to Saturdays and a buffet car train at 0940 on Sundays: the weekday train arrives at London Kings Cross at 1551 or 1559, and the Sunday train at 1810.
These trains, and others with a change in Edinburgh, are in table 195 of the Thomas Cook European Timetable, whixch may be in the reference library of a large city near you.
Welcome to Britain.

Fodors

Well, not very awesome. I failed to see the reference to Aviemore. This has a single-platform station of its own. The sleepers arrive there at 0748 and leave there at 2116, and the weekday through train arrives there at 1927 and leaves at 0829. In the long days of July you'll have full daylight at all those hours.

Ben Haines

Author:
Date: 10/18/1997, 7:52 pm ET
