Train from Barcelona to Figueras, and Figueras to Perpignan
Hi All,
After checking the cost, I dropped my plan about driving to Avignom from Barcelona and decided to take the car at Perpignan after the train ride!
I try to search the website but quite difficult to find the exact station of Barcelona, Figueras and Perpignan and the train schedule...
Please kindly help me by providing me a few links that I can do my search!
Million of thanks!

You book on the Spanish train site:
http://www.renfe.com/EN/viajeros/horarios.html
The easiest site to see most European trains:
http://www.bahn.de/i/view/USA/en/index.shtml
General train information:

You can also book on the French train site :
www.tgc-europe.com or www.sncf.com
Trains to Perpignan leave from Barcelona Sants station.
There are two fast trains a day to Perpignan via Figueres-Vilafant, one at 9.05 am and one at 4.15 pm. (Figueres-Vilafant is the new TGV station in Figueres).
There is also another direct train via the coast which leaves Barcelna at 4.42 pm and arrives at Perpignan at 7.38 pm.
Reservation compulsory on all three trains.
Finally there are local Spanish and French trains but they are slow and may involve a long wait at the Portbou/Cerbere border.

"There are actually 9 train connections daily; the fastest being those by TGV."
There are several fast trains on the Barcelona/Figueres leg of the journey but only 2 connections to Perpignan, the 9.05 am and the 4.15 pm ones. Or the old 4.42 pm Talgo which takes another route.
The new service (no change of trains at Figueres-VIlafant)has been postponed once again, unofficially to the end of May.

Thanks all for the information! Then I may need to choose the right one! Guess 9am is better for me as I would pick up car at Perpignan to continue my journey to Avignon.
Already v exciting when planning the trip!
First Europe trip with my 6 years old son, my wife and I would like to plan the trip better! We may be a bit aggressive as we would first spend a day in Paris Disneyland, do a day or two shopping before heading to Barcelona, then go to Avignon for lavender and great site seeing! Do them all in 10 days!!!!

"I think the OP wants to stop in Figueras".
All the above trains stop at Figueres. The Talgo stops at the old station, the 2 others stop at the new TGV station (Vilafant) and there is a bus between the two.
To the OP: 9.05 am is the time the train leaves Barcelona.

I am searching the train schedule on July20th, but nothing come out. Is there any change in the service?
My destination is Avignon, and once I reach France, I can rent a car to continue my journey.
If there is any news for the train services, please kindly post here! Many many thanks.

summer schedules probably not loaded yet - and like Pvoyageuse says after May many more direct TGVs will run directly between Barcelona and Perpignan.
For lots of great info on European trains in general and Spanish-French ones in specific yes www.seat61.com is great and also I always recommend looking at www.ricksteves.com and www.budgeteuropetravel.com.

I see! Thank you so much PalenQ!
As the summer is the peak season for south France, I booked everything except train ticket and car rental...
Will wait until May and hopefully there are lot more choices to Avignon.
Happy travel everyone!!!!

With the vastly improved new service and many more cross-border trains than the old Catalan Talgo which went thru the border just a few times a day I think there should be little problem booking tickets at a discount when they come on.

Wonder if the new service is heading to Avignon or Montpellier? Direct or still need connection?
Hope this is direct from Barcelona to Avignon! Then I just take the train and rent a car at Avignon!
The current train service from Montpellier to Avignon is rather slow and infrequent. If no better option, I would rent a car at Montpellier and drive to Avignon.

Rent a car in Montpellier and drive by Aigues-Mortes - one of the really oldest cities in France - once usefd as a hoppingoff point for Crusaders - this lovely stone-built port is a charmer and a nice few-hour stop right en route from Montpellier to Avignon.
If renting in Avignon pick up at the Avignon TGV train station a few miles outside of town and not the old main station, Avignon-Ville in the town center, not served by TGV trains usually.

Aigues-Mortes tourist office official site!
You could also motor by the Pont du Gard en route to Avignon.

Finally there are local Spanish and French trains but they are slow and may involve a long wait at the Portbou/Cerbere border.>
this is because normal rail tracks in Spain are wider than those in France so historically you always had to change trains at the border and yes could wait a while for the connection - the only trains to go thru the border previously before the new high-speed line were Talgo trains with moveable wheel bases where the train wheels could be cranked together or apart as needed.
Now with the advent of the new high-speed trans-Pyrenees line into France, built to standard European gauge like in France and most of Europe would make travel between Spain and France by train much much easier - if not cheaper easier!
