Hi, I've already booked a train from Milan Central to Florence on a Monday @ 2:20. I've got to get to Milan from Varenna, if I take a train which arrives 40 mins before my Florence train I know if it's on time that should be plenty of time but wasn't sure how reliable Italian trains run on time. Would I be better getting earlier train (2 hours earlier) and hanging around in Milan station? If I do miss a train because of another delayed train will they issue new ticket on next train or do I have to buy new tickets if I have a non flexible ticket?

The train from Varenna to Milan is a regional service. Like ANY train there is every possibility it might be late but I cannot imagine it is going to be THAT late so you couldn't make the connection.

Be aware that the station is rather large with many platforms but 40 minutes, or close to it, is more than enough time to make a connection.

BTW, how are you going to GET to Varenna in the first place if not by rail?

Twice I had Italian regional trains cancelled on me (had to wait longer to take the next train).

OK, why don't you get the very EARLIEST train possible? And if you do and that one is "cancelled" you'll be (probably) OK.

I'm sorry, but just because somebody had some regional train cancelled does not mean it is going to happen to you and since you bought a non-changeable onward ticket I guess you are going to have to hope as the rest of us always do.

Of course, no one knows what the situation will be on the exact day of your travel, but 40 mins. should be enough IF you first familiarize yourself with the Milano station and where your departing train is. You don't want to be fumbling around the crowded station while you're trying to change trains.

I've only once in Italy had to exchange a purchased ticket for another. It was painless.

Thanks for the replies. Dukey1, I am taking train to Varenna also but arriving from Geneva and already purchased a ticket Milan-Varenna for 1.5 hours after I arrive. Figured that was easier than figuring out the ticket machine when I get there and it's only €7 if I missed it to purchase again.

I will use this 1.5 hours the get familiar with the station for my return trip.

If you buy your tickets in a single transaction, and miss the connection because of a late or cancelled train, Trenitalia will issue a new ticket for Milan to Florence, even if you had a non-refundable ticket.
