Towns to stay/visit in Provence for 5 days in mid-August

Hi, We're headed to Provence for 5 days in mid-August and are hoping to see the lavender fields (if they are still in bloom) and just generally enjoy small towns, markets, etc. in Provence. We are flying in and out of Nice and renting a car, but we're not sure where we should stay during that time. Are there particular small towns that are better than others, or a good order in which we should try to see the towns? Can one do both western and eastern Provence in this period of time? Is it better to be based out of one town, or to mix it up?

Any thoughts or advice would be much appreciated. This will be our first trip to the region -- we know it will be crowded but it's our only time to go. Thanks!
