Towns suggestions to stay while driving Western Ireland for 5 days
My husband and I will be driving with our 2 young adult children in Clare and Connemara Countries in April, after 5 days in and around Dublin. We plan to visit coastal areas in Clare, Galway Bay and up to Westport before returning to Kildare. Should we base ourselves in Galway for the 5 days or split between Westport and another town? We enjoy hiking, eating, historical sights, photography. It's our first trip to Ireland and this is the area, other than Dublin, we've decided to explore.

I like Galway, if memory serves, the youngest major city in Europe (in terms of population) -- university town, lots of great trad music and good craic, which might interested the young folks as well; however, I was there without a car; took trains/bus and got around including a great day trip to Aran Islands.

I don't have the specific answers for you questions -- hopefully resident expert Tony2phones will jump in.
We spent a week+ staying in Killarney, Dingle and Galway. For the 3 nights in Galway, we toured the Burren on the way up, visited the Aran Islands for a day and then did a big loop around Connemara. Unfortunately, the weather didn't cooperate for the Connemara day. It made for a long day to do the whole circle and that was with cutting our walk (very) short.
Photos and more here if that helps:

If you want to see the Connemara and have a base there for a couple or three days then Clifden will tick any box you want to throw at it. For Clare as a county then Ennis is the best touring base, if you just want to follow the heard to 1/4 mile of rock face that you can't get near any more then Ballyvaughan or Lahinch possibly Doolin.

Map I did for someone staying at Ashford (not a recommendation Dun Ri in Clifden is a great mid range B&B) http://goo.gl/maps/iSQcB
