We plan to spend about a week in the Munich/Bavaria area in early July '06. Just found about the World Cup Games in various venues in Germany at that time, but...

We'd like to stay in a mid-range hotel/guest house (with private bath) outside of Munich proper. Explore the area via bus/trains/walking, etc. Any suggestions as to which town/village you'd recommend which we could use as a base?

We have considered: Regensburg/Oberammergau/Freising.

We do not want to check-in & out of hotels.

Suggestions would be appreciated & thanks.

We'd prefer a train/bus that would not include overnites. I guess that would be in 1-3 hour range I guess.

One problem with Oberammergau in terms of travel is the fact that it is at the very end of a rail line and is more than an hour by rail from Munich. If you were interested in exploring that particular part of Bavaria in depth it might be more appropriate as you can get to some of the Ludwig castles from Ober by public bus (some would tell you for that, Fuessen is better but that town is also at the end of a rail line).

Have you considered staying in Augsburg?

Thanks for the info everyone.

Augsburg is a good idea because the travel distance is very reasonable to Munich & back for one day tours. We're also going to check out the other towns suggested.

We have thought of Regensburg, but it is further.

Where are the days when we'd travel (which we have extensively) & just book a hotel for the 1st night or two & then "gypsy" on from there. Somehow I think we would still do that were it not for the fact that we are traveling in the so-called "high season."

Hi, what about Prien on Chiemsee? Another one of Ludwig's castles is there, and Prien is an hour from Munchen. Starnbergersee is also at the end of an s-bahn line I think. I remember Mittenwald as a very pretty place, but it's two hours from Munich by rail. I liked tiny Harburg (schwaben) which is north of Munich sort of. It has a lovely stone bridge, old houses, and a fortress, but I think a busline is the easiest connection, even though I remember seeing a train station. Go figure. Sorry I can't be more help. J.

I like my towns old and big, so vote for Augsburg, where I stayed three years ago. I stayed at an inn over the road from the Fuggerei, but it is a mile from the station, so I think you would want another. If the city museum is open again it is good, and celebrates the great fifteenth century capitalists and patrons of the arts, the Fuggers. The two-hour city walking tour at ten each morning is good value, and gave me such new thoughts as the boyhood of Bert Brecht there. InterCity trains run more than hourly to and from Munich, with restaurant cars for meals as you go. The last two, at 2039 and 2240, let you go home and sup after music or other events in Munich.

As in most of Germany, museums are closed each Monday.
