towns of sicily

Hi--
doing 'family' research, and getting to travel to my ancestors hometown, Poggiareale, sicily.
Someone has corrected my spelling of the town, to---Pozziarole.

anyone ever heard of a sicilian town with this spelling?
thanks

The name of the town is Poggioreale.

This is a Web link:

http://sicilia.indettaglio.it/ita/co...ggioreale.html

There is also a Web site about "The Families of Poggioreale" that you might want to look at. Simply Google Poggioreale.

I hope you'll continue to post as you plan your trip. I'd be interested in what you hope to accomplish, how long your're staying, and where else in Sicily you plan to travel. I, too, am planning a "family history" trip. I'll be spending time in Villarosa, Sicily, which is where my ancestors immigrated from shortly after the turn of the 20th century.

hi presocia--
my grandparents immigrated from Poggioreale, sicily, to the US at the beginning of the 20th century, also. Where is Villarosa?

We will go to Poggioreale. I want to find the house my grandparents lived in. also, there is a cemetery there, where my gr/gr/grandparents are buried. I only have an "idea" of where i will find that. so, far, no real help or directions.
We also plan on seeing messina, Taoromina, and siracuse.

Surfingmomma:

There is not a great deal to see in Messina; I hope you are not planning to spend much time there.

As far as I am concerned, the only good reason to go to Messina is to take the boat across to Reggio di Calabria to see the Riace bronzes in the museum there.

Hi, surfingmomma --

Villarosa is located in the province of Enna, nearly in the center of the island. It is a small town, with a population under 12,000. I will stay several nights in an agriturismo site there, and make day trips to surrounding areas. I hope to find a family cemetery there as well.

Well--going to Messina (actually passing through on the train, and stopping for lunch)--only because Messina is a family name.
Not having been to sicily before, we've had to do a bit of research about transportation, i.e., a nighttime ferry trip, from Palermo to Naples. anyone familiar with this trip? we booked a room on the ferry--Traggiotone lines.
this is a wonderful website, thank you Eloise.

Hi- You know, don't you, that the original Poggioreale was destroyed by an earthquake in 1968? And that the residents were relocated down the hill to a new town? You can still visit the old town- it's a fascinating ghost town- but it's not likely you will find the home of your ancestors. The cemetary is near the old town but you will definitely need a car. My grandparents are from Poggioreale-- what names are you looking for?
Good luck!

Hi- My aunt and I are traveling to Sicily in the Fall and want to go to Villarosa to look at the places where her father was born and lived. Can anyone help me - how do you get that type of information? Thanks a bunch.
