I've been to several parties at the waxworks, if seeing even waxier faced celebrities appeals to you then go. I certainly wouldn't queue for it, and then be expected to pay for the priviledge.
There are so many more worthwhile and historical places in London to see, but if cheap, and tacky is your thing then go.

People ar always advised to go to the Tower first thing, maybe even before it opens. Make sure you take the tour. It's lots of fun.
Madame Tuss. is pretty expensive & generally deemed not worth it, but it obviously has some appeal 'cus it's still atound. I think kids like it the best. Remember some museums have late nights & while you're there, it will stay light til 10 pm! Enjoy.

You can book a timed-entry ticket to Madame Tussauds on their website, www.http://www.madame-tussauds.co.uk/
It's cheaper after 2 pm but still expensive at nearly £20.

I agree that Madame Tussaud's is a waste of time and money, but to each his own.
Yes, get to the Tower before it opens. You can buy tickets at Tube stations, IIRC. When you enter, go first to the Crown Jewels, before they get crowded. Then go back to the entrance and pick up a (free) Beefeaters Tour, they're very iformative and amusing.

I actually enjoy Mme Tussaud's once in a while (OK, shoot me)
That being said - I would NEVER recommend someone go there on a first (or 2nd) trip to London. There is sooooooo much more to see/do before Mme Tussaud's should reach the top of one's "must see" list.

Just returned last night from London - when we visited the Tower of London we arrived at right before it opened, and were the first ones in - the crowds started to appear between 10 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. and it was so nice to be alone to look at things instead of being surrounded by massive tour groups for at least a short while.
Also did Madame Tussaud's - it was expensive and not so worthwhile (in my opinion). However, it was a break from all the museums and historical sites that I preferred but one of my traveling companions was not so keen on seeing - so it was a compromise.
