I am strongly considering touring parts of
Scotland the last week of August, 2003. I would like to visit Inverness and one or two other cities/towns in the northern part in addition to Edinburgh.
The big question is this: Will I be able to find vacant hotel rooms in Inverness, Dundee, and Aberdeen if I try "winging it"? Or, would I be running a high risk of being shut out?
Let me know what you think.

You will have little trouble finding accomodations in most parts of northern Scotland. You can book roos as you go along using the Tourist Information Centers (TIC). You simply drop in a TIC (They are all over) and tell them where you want to go next and what your requirements are re price and whether you want private, ensuite, or shared bath, etc. They phone ahead to that town's TIC and make a booking for you. Works great.
But do not expect to find accomodations in Edinburgh. Because of the festivals and tattoo in August most places book up months ahead. So make your reservations for Edinburgh as soon as your plans are finalized.
Bob, you'll find places, but it all depends how fussy you want to be. Things slow down in Scotland after the schools go back teh third week in August so there will be plenty of room but it may not be in your most desired spot.
If you are interested in the place and the accommodation is secondary, you'll be fine.
I'll stick in my usual plea that Inverness is overrated and you'd be better in the countryside round about. And there are no other northern cities and gey few towns.
Hope you have a great trip
