Touring Cathedrals and Churches in Europe
Would really appreciate your suggestions for touring cathedrals and churches in Europe. We are thinking France and England but are open to other suggestions. We woud like to limit driving, go where there is good food and see some museums as well.
Thank you and Happy 2012 to all.

There are many magnificent cathedrals and churches inj ust about every corner of Europe w/ some spectacular ones in both France and Italy.
But the UK has so many so near each other - it would be a church lovers dream destination. Just Cathedrals (not counting the nearly countless wonderful medieval churches) include Westminster Abbey (not a 'cathedral', but why quibble), Westminster Cathedral, St Pauls, Southwark (all in central London). Then Canterbury, Wells, Salisbury, Winchester, Exeter all in southern England. Yorkminster, Durham, Lincoln, Ely all to the N/NE of London. Plus many more . . .

In France:
Notre Dame de Paris; Saint Denis in Paris also; Strasbourg; Reims; Rouen; Chartres; plus, in all of those cities you will find outstanding food. All of those cathedrals/churches have good websites; plus, there are also good sites of the tourism offices.
Of course, Rome have most beautiful cathedrals and churches.
Enjoy your planning!!!

Go to your local public library and check out an art history book, preferably one that includes both architecture and fine arts.
See which churches and cathedrals it discusses and which of those most appeals to you. That is a place to begin, plus you will understand why these buildings matter and what is old and what is not.

Hi,
I have a slightly different take on your possible trip, having seen an exhibition in Germany this year about how stonemasons from France took their craft into Germany culminating in the cathedral at Naumburg, near Leipzig.

An itinerary following their trail would give a focus to your trip and enable you to see a great many other interesting things as well as the cathedrals.
