My friends and I (4 adults) will be in Italy in October, 2015. We are looking for recommendations for a tour guide for Pompeii and Herculaneum. Please let me know.

by most accounts the guides you can pay for at the ticket office are tops- just go there and buy a ticket and arrange to get on a tour - trains go constantly between the two sites.

FWIW, I thought the on-site audio-guides more than sufficient for each -- no need to use a tour guide unless that is your preference.

I and my family have visited Pompeii in June, we arrived in Naples with the Allure of the Seas, I booked a tour on the site http://www.pompeiitours.guide/ why on the ship excursions are more expensive.
The tour was Pompeii and Amalfi coast, with private driver, and private guide,Gabriella very prepared and kind.
We spent a beautiful day!

We used a guide at Pompeii and audio guide at Herculaneum. The guide was recommended by our driver - http://www.francescomarrapese.com/mycar.htm
We paid 100€ for approximately 2 hours. He was very good.

There were no guides by Herculaneum. I really don't think you need one.

PalenQ - there are trains between Pompeii and Herculaneum? I have been trying to figure out how to get them both in one day. I haven't seen any "tours" that offer both from Rome. Any info would be great - thanks!

Yes, the train that goes to Herculaneum continues a few stops more to Pompeii. We did the 2 in a day, but were staying in Naples.

Normally a do-it-yourselfer, I joined a group of seven others to obtain one of the guides on-site at Herculaneum. I found our guide informative and entertaining and the cost very reasonable at €10 apiece.

The train stop near Herculaneum is marked for Ercolano -- the modern-day city there. As I recall, it isn't far to the ruins.

But one can walk fairly easily for a km or so to Herculaneum from Pompeii - is that right?

??? I think its close to 20 km between Pompeii and Herculaneum. I could be wrong. Have you tried goole maps?

As I recall, it's about 1 km from the train station in Ercolano -- along the train route that connects to Pompeii -- to the ruins of Herculaneum. Maybe that's what has confused you?

We also took a tour with Lucia last October while our cruise stopped in Naples. Her tour was excellent for Herculaneum. Friends we shared the tour with had used Lucia for Pompeii previously. Lucia met each tour at the respective train stations. Deborah

Here's the route map from the Circumvesuviana website between Naples/Sorrento (although it's not that easy to read). You would want the Ercolano Scavi stop (there are two Ercolano stops) and the Pompeii Scavi. There are a couple of tourist trains per day that only stop at those two stops on the way to Sorrento (costs quite a bit more than the regular Circumvesuviana).

If you plan to visit both, get the combo ticket for 22€ which is good for three days. Pompeii only is 13€ and Herculaneum is 11€ so it saves you a few euro. You could also get the 3 day Campania Artecard for 32€ which would include the entrance to the two sites and your transport (plus transport in Naples - metro/trams/buses/funiculars). First two sites you visit are free (Pompeii and Herculaneum are some of the more expensive sites on the card) and after that you get discounts. It used to include a discount on the audio guides also, but you would have to check if that is still the case.
