Torino Young City

TORINO YOUNG CITY 2012
From 7 June to 5 August, a great event dedicated to creativity, entertainment, sport, participation and experimentation, to help make the young the protagonists of the transformation of the city.

In the last fifteen years Turin has learnt to shed its skin to emerge, motivated by the natural tendency towards change, as a centre of multiple vocations.

The Piedmont capital has in fact shown that it knows how to marry the excellence that has made it internationally famous with its lively underground nature.

Turin has confirmed its place as a young, contemporary city, a training ground for the future, in a journey towards the redevelopment of entire districts now heavily frequented thanks to the multiplication of new premises and cultural spaces - art galleries, designer boutiques, creative workshops – that are creating new languages based around young people and their potential.

It is from the young that the city hopes to move forward with even greater impetus along the road of rebirth and transformation that has seen it emerge as one of the most interesting destinations in Italy and elected as European Youth Capital in 2010.

These are the origins of TORINO YOUNG CITY - a City of Turin project, sponsored by Iren and Intesa Sanpaolo - sistema di eventi with the aim of promoting over the medium-long term, the work in support of youth undertaken over the last few years.
The roots of TORINO YOUNG CITY have in fact sprung from the fertile breeding ground of established projects such as Traffic Free Festival, MTV Days, Performing Festival and Festival delle Colline that have placed Turin at the centre of the international map for young tourism. This project will integrate these events with new programmes with creative proposals drawn from the diverse artistic disciplines.

With TORINO YOUNG CITY, the City will go even further: thanks to its close relationship with the business world, it has secured more resources to finance new projects with the dual aim of promoting the territory and its cultural fabric.

“Our aim is to define Turin every year in the months of June and July, as the city dedicated to the development of youth-related themes. We will examine the trends and explore the interests and issues that affect new generations,” explains the Mayor Piero Fassino. “It will be a special occasion both for citizens and for guests, who can participate in the projects, events, performances and useful debates to better understand the dynamics of this world and reflect on the delicate intergenerational relationship, areas of extreme importance and current interest”.

THE 4 THEMES OF THE TOYOU PROGRAM ARE:
LIFE, CREATIVITY, TRAINING AND SPORT

LIFE
is the theme that runs through the festivals of music such as Traffic Free Festival and MTV DAYS that for years have brought the most interesting national and international artists to Turin and new events such as Seattle Torino/One way hosted by Chris Cornell and celebrating Seattle grunge. There is Europa Cantat the leading choral festival, in Italy for the first time, Performing Festival the performing and creative arts show, and the City Slideshow urban event with video projections in Piazza Palazzo di Città on the facade of the Palazzo Civico that will conclude the Festival of Music with the dj set by Boosta and young photographers from all over Italy. There are theatre productions offering a prestigious showcase of the latest contemporary creations by leading protagonists, such as the Festival delle Colline Torinesi and Teatro a Corte and finally original productions that combine theatre, street art, dance, nouveau cirque and performing art in unique city venues.

CREATIVITY
is the theme that brings together young artists from all over the world in the symbolic city sites dedicated to the emerging arts that Turin believes will be the key areas of future development in workshops such as Pic Turin, the mural art festival that promotes the artistic expertise of young writers.

TRAINING
is the name selected for the forum dedicated to exchange. The main event will be Oltre i Limiti an opportunity to reflect on the theme of limits, in the sense of energy, thought, actions and the dreams of the young.
Another not-to-be missed project is Giorno per Giorno to include events, workshops and seminars focused on the interdisciplinary nature of art.

SPORT
sporting events with a particular focus on urban sports. Torino Street Style will take place in the centre of Turin and allow young people to learn about and try little known sports such as: orienteering, Trail Running, Mountain Biking, Street Golf, bike Polo, Rhon wheeling, BMX biking, Skate Boarding and Urban Climbing. Then there is the track-and-field meet.

Finally, there is Aperitò with open-air aperitifs from 21-24 June and Green moove – la scuola è come l'aria, pulita (The school is as clean as the air), with special guest Motel Connection dj set on 13 June.
