Top 10 things to bring to Italy???
Hello everyone! I have one question to pose to you great travelers:
What are the Top 10 things to bring for a trip to Italy? I know the obvious, camera, soap, sunglasses, etc. I am looking for things that you didn't realize you needed until it was too late ...

passport, ATM card, credit card.
Every hotel in Italy provides soap and shampoo.
You don't need to bring Euros with you - get them from ATM on arrival.
Printouts of hotel reservations, restaurant names & tel #'s, critical directions, train schedules, etc are handy to have.
A med sized duffel bag, in which to stuff your dirty clothes as you go is a good idea. You can pack things you buy in suitcase, and squishy stuff like clothes in the duffel. It takes up no room when empty.

If you plan on any time outside of big cities or riding on regional trains, bring toilet paper and hand sanitizing gel. (Actually, I carry these items at all times but increasingly find I only need them in small towns or on secondary trains.)
Small binoculars to see details in church ceilings and to look at distant scenery.
A journal to record interesting or useful details, unexpected delights, etc.
An umbrella to keep in my suitcase as insurance against rain. If I take it out, it will rain. Likewise, copies of our passport ID pages. If I don't bring them, we will lose our passports.

A corkscrew and a Swiss Army knife (or
something for cutting meats/cheeses). Both in the checked bag, of course. It seems like when I haven't had one of these, I couldn't find one to buy when I needed it. Murphy's Law, I think.

ear plugs
After years of traveling, this has been a recent discovery for me. As soon as the airplane is ready to take off, I pop them in. There's an incredible difference--much of the airplane hum is elimnated for a much quieter experience. When I pop them out for a mealtime chat with my companions, the airplane seems unbelievably loud.
Depending on your accomodations, the earplugs might be handy at other points in the trip as well.
I find the blue foam earplugs most comfortable for me, rather than the waxlike kind.

Antacid-if you use it at home. From Rolaids/Tums to ranitadine/Zantac style indigestion relief aids, it is the one thing I found difficult to purchase in Italian farmacia...which are otherwise wonderfully supplied.

An extra piece of luggage or two, for all the purchases. We travel with a couple of duffles that zip up to about the size of a frisbee when not in use. We put our dirty clothes in those on our return and use a 21" carry on for purchases.
Coming back from Italy we had an involutary overnight in London (missed connection.) So, we had no clean clothes with us overnight, but we had our carryon stuffed with Venetian masks, leather purses, glass jewelry, etc! LOL!
