Harry's is rather tired actually, and the belinis are very overpriced. Tourist trap numero uno. Nice location however. Hemingway was a long time ago, as Col. Cantwell would say. Suggest that you save your money for a meal at Da Fiore, and do get that reservation before you go.

We went to Harry's bar last summer -- it was a hoot! Went there just for pre-dinner drinks -- the famous Bellini, of course. It was delicious, just what we had hoped for. It was also a very, very small drink and cost about $12! But the ambience alone was worth the 2 Bellinis each that we had. The place was very crowded and we just stood at the bar. The bartender was obviously annoyed with a couple of young American girls who were sitting at the bar and his annoyance was evident. He must have liked us (don't know why) because he gave us impeccable service. It was just fun to be there, watching all the comings and goings!

Agree with the suggestion of eating at Da Fiores. Hard to find but food that is spectacular. We ate lunch their and it was close to $150.00 but worth it. Harrys bar is a to do because everyone knows of it. Skip the Bellinis overpriced and easy to make yourself.

I had to at least step into it and say that I saw it. It's very small and always extremely crowded. I have a Harry's Bar cookbook which is awesome. Go and have a drink, it'll be fun..but you have to have tea or coffee at The Florian. Its an opulent café in St. Marks square that was built in 1720 and was a rendezvous for Dickens, Proust and Lord Byron. A wonderful rest stop after hours of walking. Spending an evening at Harry's Bar in Venice is one of our most cherished memories! Yep the drinks were pricy, but after the 3rd one.. who cares? You in Venice!
We just sat at the bar and people watched... talked to the friendly bartender... Confession though, neither my husband nor I could STAND the famous bellini's... yuck! But that's probibly just us.. I got hooked on the screwdrivers made from those lovely Sicislian Blood Oranges.... OHHHH I still dream about that.. it was dark when we left and we caught a late night gondola ride...it was extraordinary!

Lynn-- I agreee with "x" and all those others who have been and gone--
Harry's Bar is very overrated- and the drinks are overpriced--If you want to see it, walk in --look and then exit...

Go straight to the outdoor cafe on San Marco Sq and SIT DOWN and have a Coffee and people watch-- I spent every afternoon their writing in my journal and people watching ( after all the sightseeing) and spent the evenings listening to the music---you can sit FOREVER for the price of 1 coffee--No one makes you leave!
It really encompasses the essence of Venice!

Harry's Dolci on the guidecca is much better than Harry's Bar though you must do the latter to say you've done it. Harry's Dolci is best for lunch on a warm sunny day when you can be seated outside, have the famous bellini in the same glasses as at Harry's Bar but look across the water that laps at your feet and see the Dorsoduro on the otherside with its beautiful churches--and the vaporettos going to and fro. Heaven.
Not to mention their great Gnocchi.

It's one of those places to say you've been there and done it, so since it is part of the mystique of Venice and therefore worth visiting. Saying that, the Bellinis weren't anything at all special - to each their own- but thanks, Thyra, for reminding me of blood orange screwdrivers. Any drink with blood oranges is better than with regular OJ (and I'm a Florida girl).

We were with another couple in Venice and it was extremely hot. I was in bermuda length shorts. The girls went shopping. My buddy and I went to Harry's around 4 in the afternoon to kill some time. They would not allow me in with the shorts on. The rest of me was fine as I had on a nice polo and good shoes...no tennis shoes, real shoes. They still would not allow me in so we went to the hotel across the street and found they have a patio overlooking the canal and gondola parking/pickup spot. We sipped our beers and watched the traffic on the canal and the action with the gondoleers. Much better than Harry's! Thank you Harry for kicking me out. I was cooler, the beer was great and the views could not be beat. Next time....I wear pants and sweat in Harry's.

On our last visit to Venice we dropped into Harry's Bar for a bellini - loved it, though pricey. What made me laugh was they wouldn't allow in a family group from America as the men were wearing knee length shorts but they had no objection to the woman in the VERY short mini skirt sitting draped near the bar.
Kay
