So much for trying to travel incognito.

Hi Patrick, I just read that about an hour ago. And interesting, no private jet for the Blairs.

In the movie "love actually" when the US President, played by Billy Bob Thorton visits the English Prime Minister played by Hugh Grant, he (Hugh) tells the President...by the way, I really envy your "plane"... I wish we had one of those.... I thought it was just a joke, I assumed that the English Prime Minister really did have a private plane! I guess not!

Tony Blair obviously doesn't have a private plane: he's been a politician almost all his workikng life, and neither he nor his wife have ever earned enough to afford such a thing.

The British Prime Minister, like his fellow-ministers and some senior members of the royal family, has access to a small private fleet. This may be used only on State - ie non-party - business. The Labour Party, during national elections, hires - at its expense - planes to carry its leader around the country for campaigning.

If Blair goes on holiday, he is responsible for paying for his own transport. Of course being the greedy, conniving toerag that he is, he's spent much of the past nine years pretending he needs publicly-funded transport for his hols. His arguments have now worn thin, and even in the parallel universe he's created for himself in Downing Street, it's finally sunk in that getting us to pay for his holidays merely adds to the endless collection of sleaze and corruption for which this repulsively compulsive liar and his acolytes will be forever remembered.

So he flies BA. And his wife adds yet another complaint to her long list of resentments.

Well, I'm really sad to hear that, Flanner..all that hard work and no bennies and pork...perhaps he should have been a politician in the US.

Of course, there are lost bof folks who think he already IS a politician in the US..just posted to another country briefly.

yes - many Americans like him (funny that!).

My heart agrees with Dukey but I couldn't for one minute be as vituperative as Flanner.

So Flan, in what way would the UK be a better place if the Tories had been running it for the last 9 years? I think we should be told.

I think we Fodorites should pool for a private plane. (For us, I mean; unless Tony and Cheri are posting here....)

Still bumming free accommodation, though.

I was quite amused to hear on the radio (BBC Radio 4) this morning that 10 Downing Street wouldn't comment on whether or not Blair was on that plane (as they no longer comment on his holidays, due to all the previous bad press) - but the US Secret Service were happy to confirm it

Still reading the Daily Mail, then FlannerUK?
I actually agree with much of what you said about Blair. As most people in Scotland think he's a Tory in disguise anyway the last part of your diatribe fits perfectly!

Oh dear. Was that the best invite he got this year? Could be the beginning of the end ...

Of course, George W. doesn't have a "private plane" either. He just gets to use the plane that the US taxpayers provide for the President. When he goes on vacation-to clear brush at his ranchette in Texas- he flies there on the plane at taxpayer expense. When he goes anywhere, and this is true of all presidents, not just W, he combines his actual trip with some small "official" event and we taxpayers pay for it.

So, instead of complaining about the cost of a few first class tickets on BA, thank your lucky stars that you're not having to pay for the entire plane and all that that involves.

Of course, this isn't an arrangement just for President Bush.

ummh replace his holidays with the royal family's

and liars for liar

and their acolytes for his

and you could have the royal family, which i assume flanner thinks having them on the dole is a good investment for Britain - fuzzy thinking for sure if opposing the same T B-Liar.

I think it's pretty much common knowledge that all U.S. Presidents go everywhere on Air Force One or Marine One, whether it be "on vacation-to clear brush at his ranchette in Texas" or to snarl traffic for hours in New York City to hobnob with his buddies.

US taxpayers foot the bill for his and his family's Secret Service protection while on US soil.
Do the Brits reimburse the US for same?
