After spending several weeks in Europe we will end up in Switzerland. We will spend 3 nights in Lucerne and decided to go to Wengen for one night after hearing such good things. The following morning we would be headed to Zurich airport. The problem is that we will have 3(?)pieces of luggage and this could present a problem if we don't have a Wengen hotel close to the train station. Are the trains direct from Lucerne to Wengen, and then again direct to Zurich airport? I'm second guessing how realistic it is to make the side trip to Wengen, yet I've heard such good things about Bernese Oberland. I appreciate opinions or suggestions to this novice. Thanks.
To Wengen, Switzerland or not?

Well, if I understood you correctly, you're spending part of a day and one night in Wengen? Well, one day in Wengen is beter than no days in Wengen.
Leave Lucern early in the morning. Take the earliest train connection from Lucern to Wengen. That way, you'll have some daylight hours to maybe go up to Kleine Scheidegg. Or Perhaps take the cable from Wengen up to Mannlichen so you can do the one hour stroll from Mannlichen to Kleine Scheidegg.
You will take the train from Lucern to Interlaken Ost (East). Then you need to change trains over to Lauterbrunnen. Then change to the mountain train up to Wengen.
Even though I have never actually checked my luggage in at the train stations, you might want to check your luggage at the Lucern station all the way to Wengen. Since I take one set of luggage to the Jungfrau area, I ljust lug everything around myself. I hope someone will make comments on luggage transfers.
The above information is correct.
You travel to Wengen via Interlaken Ost and Lauterbrunnen with changes of trains at Interlaken and Lauterbrunnen because the mountain side from Lauterbrunnen to Wengen is so steep an ordinary train will not make it.
I think once you get to Wengen, you will wonder why you spent so much time in Luzern. If you leave Luzern at 8:35 you can be in Wengen by 11:14. Chunk your bags into the hotel and grap the lift to the top of the Männlichen Ridge for the greatest views within easy range.
If you are of a mind, take the long gondola ride down to Grindelwald Grund, and then take the mountain trail back to Wengen via Kleine Scheidegg in time for dinner. Kleine Scheidegg is the jumping off place for the train to the Jungfraujoch. From Kleine Scheidegg, you can see well the north face of the Eiger, the Mönch, and the Jungfrau.
The trip to the airport from Wengen is about 3 hours and 40 minutes.
You make your luggage sound like non rolling monsters. My wife and I have two each, and moving them 500 yards or so is no problem, unless it is straight up a steep hill.
The Berner Oberland is probably our favorite piece of earth. For one night, you should probably consider skipping.
Luzern to Wengen:
-train to Interlaken Ost (either via Bern and possible connection or direct via scenic route over the Brünig Pass)
-change to BOB train to Lauterbrunnen
-change to WAB train (narrow gauge) for trip up to Wengen.
Total trip time about 3 hours.
Outbound to Zürich will be the same except you'll go via Bern from Interlaken Ost, with a possible change of train in Bern.
Why not change to two nights in Luzern and give yourself two nights in the Jungfrau region?

Last year, I took a fun trail that began just over from the Eiger Glacier station. It started just under the Eiger and wound down to the Alpiglen train station.

Throughout the walk, I got great views of that magnificent Eiger.
Alpiglen to the Glacier station is probably more of a huffer and puffer than going down that trail, but going down the trail is fun and offers great views. I remember seeing the Wetterhorn right in front of me also.
This person can go up to Kleine Scheidegg and find a nice piece of green grass above that tee P area and sit down and just look at the Jungfrau, Monch and Eiger. And folks, if you can do that, then you have a productive day in my opinion!
I like to sit at that gazebo thing in KS and do a goulash soup with a frosty, cold beer. Or as frosty and cold as the Swiss prepare it anyway.

I don't have much to add to all of the above posts on Wengen, just a tip for your luggage. I would send at least one big bag directly from Lucerne to the Zurich airport. They'll hold it for you there and then you just pick it up when you're on your way to check in. It'll cost about 10 chf per bag, and then maybe 5 chf per day for holding. Then for your last day (or two), you can live out of your smaller bag.

It may be tight- and I assume that you are driving? - but try this on for size. After getting into Zurich (and sight seeing there if you want to) you can go to Konstanz (which is right on the border of Switzerland and Germany and only an hour or two from Zurich). Plan on staying the night there and you can sight see around the city - highly recommend the Dom and the center of town, the little garden area near the Insel Hotel. There is a faboulous resturant called the Radischen on one of the back streets of the Fussganger Platz. The next day you can take the ferry across Lake Constance (also known as the Bodensee) to Lindau. Then drive up to Fussen (where there is a nice little church, and near Neuschwanstein). Then on the last day drive up to Munich. Like I said, very tight, but I think that you can do it, if you don't spend a lot of time in each place. If I had to spend the most time in one place, I would prob either do it in Konstanz (lots of good day trips around there, and lodging isn't all that expensive - or didn't use to be), or in Fussen to see Ludwig's castles, and day trip to Oberammergau.
If you are taking the train, going to Konstanz would still be the most convienant from Zurich, and then you can take the train around the lake - up to Stuttgart is about 2 hours - and maybe go through Ulm?
We stayed in Wengen with usual number of luggages. Although we were ready to carry the luggages ourselves, during prior correspondances with the hotel Alpenrose, we found out that if we call the hotel from the train station upon arrival, they would come and get us and the luggages. They had a golfcart based shuttle for this purpose. Ask your hotel if they have such service; your choice of hotels will be greater. It seemed that the hotels near the station are very large tourist group type of hotels. Quaint family run hotels seemed to be further away from the station, which means either up or down the mountain slope in Wengen.
