To Paris then Where???
Thanks for all your suggestions on my earlier post. Now I wonder since we are definitely going to Paris, if London is the right second choice. It seems very expensive. Is it worth it or should we journey to another part of Europe? We have 10 days. Any recommendations?

I've done Paris - Amsterdam, Paris - London, Paris - Loire, Paris - Lyon.
I like the combo of big city-small city/countryside.
With high speed trains, you can get from Paris to somewhere else fairly easily. One item to consider is your flight back. If you can find an Open Jaw, that would give you your start/end points. With Paris - Loire, fly in/out of Paris. I rented a car in Paris to visit the Loire.
Other consideration is acclimatization.I f fisrt trip to Europe, you land in London, it's english, you can find your way around, get over jet lag, then onwards to Paris where it will take bit more effort to get a feel for the place.
London can be done "cheaper". You will get some good ideas here (like Priceline for hotel...or go to B&Bs)

Well Venice is VERY romantic. I'm going this next year with my girlfriends so I'm not sure how romantic it will be for us riding on a gondola together, lol. But I went with my husband and I think it was the most romantic town ever, well right next to Paris I guess. But we also stayed at a B&B in the middle of the French countryside. WE rented a car and drove there. It was an old restored castle that is now their home and small inn and it was amazing! It wasn't too pricey either, although our dinner in a nearby town was but that's because it was very high end....memorable. It wasn't a huge castle like you might find in Germany, but more like someplace that someone rich would have owned, with staff quarters underground and everything. The owners were very nice, and kept to themselves most of the time, unless we wanted help. Anyway, if you want the info on our castle stay I can get it for you. I just have to look it up in my scrapbook.

Well the castle B&B we stayed in wasn't in Venice, it was in France. It was in the Burgundy region, just outside of Beaune. But the name of the place was Chateau d'Ecutigny, in Ecutigny. I think they have about 6 rooms but try to get the one at the end of the hall because you're bathroom is in the turret of the castle with a big old claw foot tub. They had a website but apparently it's no longer in use but I think they now list through various booking agencies. If you google the name you should find a number of links to it. Also, if you're interested, you can go to this link and see some pictures that my husband and I took.

On my very first grand tour of Europe, it was Amsterdam that enchanted me the most after Paris. Not the prettiest of cities, but a very nice atmosphere. And after that, I loved Copenhagen and Lisbon. Back then, long ago, the cities that I hated were Madrid and Vienna.
