I am flying from Los Angeles to Belfast via Heathrow on United. At Heathrow's Terminal 1 I will need to change to a BMI flight to Belfast. My friend will be flying into Terminal 1 from Zurich on a Swiss Air flight. She has already ticketed that leg but I had to get the Belfast flight from United for her. My question(s): will we both need to retrieve our luggage and go through customs/immigaration at Heathrow or will my luggage be sent straight through to Belfast? And can anyone tell me of a convenient place for us to meet in Terminal 1?

You will have your luggage checked through as it's one itinerary. Just follow the signs for "Flight Connections". You could follow the rest of the crowd through to landside but it would increase your chances of missing your onward flight.
You friend may have problems getting luggage checked through as it's separate flights. Can't see any evidence of an interline agreement between Swiss & BMI but it doesn't hurt to ask the check-in clerk if they'll check the luggage through which means she'd be able to use the Flight Connections centre
So how long are you giving your friend between flights? Anything under 3 hours and she'll have a poor chance of catching the onward flight without having luggage checked through
