First of all, you don't really need a car for this trip. You can do it all with train and bus if you wish.

Secondly you can stay near the castles, Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau, instead of in Fussen. There are some hotels very nearby in Schwangau. This would help you get an early start on Saturday.

But, if you're driving, there's a beautiful rococo church, Wieskirche, not too far up the road from Fussen/Schwangau. This church is sited among fields and meadows with cows. The contrast between the surroundings and the ornate church interior is startling. Wieskirche is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Well worth a stop.

On the way between Munich and Salzburg is another of King Ludwig's castles, Herrnchiemsee. In this castle Ludwig aimed to outdo Versailles. It's located on an island. You take a boat to the island and walk (or take a carriage) to the castle. I really enjoyed this visit but it does take some time. (You can do this also by public transportation but that would take even more time.)

Do you plan to see anything of the Salzkammergut, the Austrian lake country, while you're in Salzburg? Since you'll have a car.

Note that for driving in Austria you need to buy a vignette, a temporary road license. These are available at the border or at nearby gas stations. You also should have an IDP, an International Driver's Permit that is a translation of your license. These are available easily and cheaply at AAA/CAA offices; they'll even take your photo.

We found the driving easy in Germany and rental cars relatively cheap.

Thank you for the detail on buying the vignette. We have driven Germany before, found it manageable.

Wanted a car as sometimes we wander and wanted to flexibility to visit places like Schwangau, Rocco Church, Herrnchiemsee etc..

We had not fully flushed out Salzburg yet, is the Austria lake region where Hallstatt is located?

Yes, Hallstatt is about an hour away from Salzburg, on Hallstatt See. En route are other lakes and hills of the Salzkammergut. St. Gilgen looks like a nice town.

Great - based on your feedback and reading Fodors reco's will probably spend more days in our Munich/ Fussen /Salzburg /Munich route than initially planned.

So any further suggestions to explore/experience is very much appreciated - so excited !!

Fuessen hotel with free parking. www.hotel-Hechten.com

We stayed here twice.

Don't stay in Salzburg. Stay in the nearby Berchtesgaden area. Beautiful alpine scenery and less than 30 minute drive to Salzburg.

I posted this for another post:

HI Cindywho,

We love staying in the Berchtesgaden area and visiting Salzburg, less than 30 minutes away by car, for a day and evening. Sometimes we go just for dinner and a stroll afterwards, but love staying in the alpine area by Berchtesgaden.

So many places and things based here.
Berchtesgaden
Konigssee
Jennerbahn
Eagles Nest
Sommerrodelbahn (luge rides)
Eagles Nest
Salt Mine
Salzburg... Park in Monchburg Parking Garage.
Hallein, Austria.. Luge ride, Salt Mine
Werfen, Austria... Hohenwerfen Fortress, Ice Caves
Salzkammergut.... Wolfgangsee (spend a day out on a lake ship visiting St. Wolfgang, Strobl and St. Gilgen. Park in St. Gilgen.

Half day trip to Herrenchiemsee.
Day trip to Zell am See or Hallstatt.

Look at staying at:
Pension Mayringerlehen - Ramsau bei Berchtesgaden
Guesthouse Friedwiese - Schonau am Konigssee
Pension Grubenlehen - Ramsau bei Berchtesgaden

Now your in my wheelhouse ... my favorite part of the world.

I recommend that you take in the cheesy but fun Bavarian evening at @ 7pm upstairs at the Hofbrauhaus. There's yodeling, cowbells, wood choppers, slap dancing and the chicken dance. Have you hotel call in reservations because it can fill,up with tour busses. You can have dinner or just a beer and eat somewhere else. We like to eat at the Augustiner brewery. There are several of them around.

When you leave Munich, You can make a big loop out of it. Take the autobahn route to Fussen. You'll get plenty of scenery before you're done. You can stay in Schwangau, Fussen or one of our favorites. Gutshof zum Schluxen, a working farm B&B in Unter Pinswang, just on the Austrian side of the border on the way to Reutte. About 3-5 miles from a Fussen. There is a big sommerrodelbahn in Reute that's fun.
From there go to see Weiskirche then drive to Oberammergau to check out the wood carvings. You can stop at Ludwigs Schloss Linderhof and the Ettal monastery on the road to Garmish. In Garmish you can take a lift to the top of the Zugspitze (Germanys tallest alp).
Ten miles down the road toward Insbruke you will find Mittenwald, the violin makers village.
After that take the road through the Inn valley to Berchtesgaden. Koenig See at Berchtesgaden has a beautiful boat ride.
In Salzburg have a meal at the 900 year old Sankt Peter's Stiftskeller, right behind the graveyard where they hid from the Nazis in the Sound of Music. They say Charlemagne ate there. They have a spendy white tablecloth dinner and Mozart show upstairs. In the cellar it is cheaper and very charming. Check in at the tourist information office on Mozart square. See if they have a schedule of concerts going on in town. Some are free student concerts in the churches.
On your way back to Munich, about half way, the town of Prien is the jumping off point for Herrenchiemsee castle, more Ludwig, this time it's his copy of Versailles.
Have fun and raise a glass to the rest of us who just wish we were there.

What a wheelhouse it is !! - thank you.

Slowly but surely increasing the number of days in our Germany / Austria loop adding days to both Munich and along our meandering route.

Thoughts.....with 5 days remaining (day 6 we fly home out of Munich) after Germany / Austria loop. We would like to visit either Italian lakes region including Lugano or Cinque Terre - would be flying roundtrip Munich to Milan (Lin)

Maybe a silly question- Is the topography of Italian Lakes region including Lugano too similar our Germany / Austria loop?
