Tickets to the Louvre

I will be in Paris September 22 through September 26. I would like to leave my options open and get tickets either on a Friday or Saturday. Would it be okay for me to get the tickets while I'm France or should I buy on-line before I get to Paris.

Thank you.

There is no reason to buy online if you don't want to. You won't get any discount. If you want one in advance, you can get one at the ticket office at FNAC stores, but they often have lines, also, but probably not as bad as the Louvre. I assume that is why you care, otherwise there is no point at all to buying in advance if it isn't that you fear lines. It doesn't bother me that much as they have never been that long when I'm there and I often go when there are lots of tourists (like July).

If going to a couple of other museums check out the Paris Museum Pass which also gets you priority entrance sans lines usually into Louvre and other popular museums - just a few museum entries can make the pass worthwhile - Versailles chateau is included in it and again priority entrance I believe. Buy it at any museum but I usually buy mine at a minor museum sans any lines - to buy at Louvre you'd have to wait in a long line I believe.

Now in the newish underground commercial area of the Louvre I understand you can buy Louvre tickets in vending machines and often without any lines - near where the bus tours dump off folks.

I would get tickets in underground commercial area as suggested by Palen, I bought only once the Museum Pass and I thought it was not a good idea. Too expensive and it is not healthy to pack too many museums visits in a short period of time.

I have my Plan/Information Louvre in front of me. An alternative we found to the main Pyramid and very crowded entrance was one at 99 rue de Rivoli and the entrance at the Porte des Lions. Enjoy.

We went the first Sunday of the month when it is free so the lineups were terrible. Followed a fellow fodorite's suggestion that we go in the Carrousel entrance (underground commercial area). There were no lineups at all and we just walked in. Do not look for a carrousel (as we did). Just concrete steps called Carrousel. Look at a map of the exterior of the Louvre.

A travel agent told us to avoid lines at the Louvre enter through the Metro entrance, which is either the Palais Royale/Musee du Louve stop or the Louvre/Rivoli (ask someone when you get there unless someone can post which it is; both are on the same line). Anyway it worked for us.

It's the Palais Royale entrance. The Louvre entry is directly off the metro platform...just follow the signs.

About 3 years ago, we bought our Louvre tickets at the tabac just inside that entry...the tabac was to the right after entering. We also bought Musee D'Orsay tickets for the next day and were able to avoid those lines, too.
