Thoughts on Greece Itinerary for September

Jump to last reply

Hello all. My wife and I have decided on Greece for this year's trip, first time there. We will have 10 nights, and while we are in the early stages, this is what we are thinking--2 nights in Athens and 4 nights each in Santorini and Crete (those are somewhat flexible but is our thought at this point). We arrive on the overnight flight on Sunday morning. We will then immediately head out to one of the islands (depending on availability of the hotels we are looking into). We figured since we have to come back to Athens at the end for our flight home, it did not make sense to stay in Athens the first couple of days, then come back at the end for kind of a wasted night.

So we'll head out to (probably) Santorini first, looking into various hotel options but thinking of staying in Oia as a base there. Will check out all the towns, walk around, perhaps spend a half day on the beach relaxing.

Then off to Crete. Still have not decided where to stay, have read many thoughts from people about Chania v. Herkalion v. Elounda. Would welcome any thoughts on this issue. I know it is a huge island and seeing everything in the time we have is just not possible. But I also was thinking of renting a car, so even if we were in Elounda, we could then get to Herkalion easily and Knossos, then also check out Ag Nikolaos, Krista and also take a boat to Spinalonga to see that, and also perhaps drive out to Chania one day.

After that, back to Athens and spend a couple of days there, seeing the sites before heading home.

That's the early plan at this point and wanted to see what the Greece experts here thought of that.

Thanks so much!
