Thinking Spain for family summer trip 2012

Just back from our Christmas Break trip in SoCal and need to get on the ball for summer, then I'll back track to spring break.
We are a fam of 4. Kids are 2 boys 12 and 9. They are amazing travelers and have been to Europe once (italy last christmas), south America twice, and central America twice.
We are thinking about 2 weeks and would like to divide up our time to see Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, Toledo, and any other must sees. I will start looking at air fare soon.
I know it's hot in the summer, but as Miamians we are totally fine with the heat (actually looking forward to packing light!)
Gracias!!

With 2 weeks you'd have just enough time to visit the cities you mention plus Granada (which I would definitely recommend if you're visiting Andalucia for the first time). Something like Barcelona-4 nights, Madrid-4 nights w/daytrip to Toledo, Sevilla-4 nights w/a day trip to Cordoba and Granada-2 nights. This is moderately paced particularly with 2 children so if you like a slower pace I'd recommend cutting one of the geographies. If you don't have a full 14 nights in Spain I'd probably cut a geography. If you have a few more days you could add a couple of days to Barcelona, Madrid, or add the white villages or Malaga.

I'd try to fly into Barcelona and return from Granada or Malaga (or vice versa). Even if you have to catch a connecting flight it's better than having to backtrack and loose precious time during your trip.

We did a two week trip to spain for spring break and did Madrid, Seville, Malaga(skip it) and Barcelona. We took the train from madrid to seville, drove from seville to malaga thru the white villages and a day trip to Granda, dropped the car and flew to Barcelona and then flew again from barcelona to Madrid to fly home. iberia had great fares on the one way jumps between malaga, barcelona and madrid. our boys were a bit older than yours at the time but we had a fantastic time.

It depends on the airline. If you fly Iberia (or an affiliated airline) then you could fly into Barcelona and home from Granada but you may have a connection flight in Madrid.

Once in Spain if you use the Barcelona, Madrid, Sevilla, Granada sequence (or reverse) it's all good by train (or bus from Sevilla to Granada).

Logistically, flying into Barcelona and out of Madrid using CathyM's routing makes a lot of sense except for one thing. The longest leg of the trip would be Granada to Madrid, which may note be ideal if returning to Madrid just to fly out. You would need to come back and stay the night in Madrid in order to make your flight home the next day.

If you want to avoid that, you could consider flying the Barcelona to Seville leg, then traveling to Granada and finally on to Madrid to finish. The fares from BCN to SVQ are very affordable.

I must have not been clear. I wasn't suggesting traveling by ground from Granada to Madrid. I was suggesting flying Barcelona. Train Barcelona to Madrid. Train from Madrid to Sevilla. Bus or train from Sevilla Granada. Fly home via Granada. Iberia, for example has morning flights that would connect in Madrid so no need to spend the final night in Madrid. Another alternative would be to use a skyteam airlines (delta, air france, klm) and fly home via Malaga. If this was the best choice I'd probably start the trip in Granada and end in Barcelona since you'd end the trip in your departure city (no need to travel on your departure day).

I know you said you like heat but Andalusia can easily be 100 degrees for many days in a row and 110 is not unknown. Also, AC is NOT universal - so you need to be sure your hotel hax American style AC - and be careful about transit and restaurants. Be sure always to carry enough water and to stay hydrated - and assume you may want to spend afternoons in the hotel pool. Also - prepare the kids for a late dinner - restaurants don;t open before 9 typically and most people dine at 10 or so.
