As far as I can tell from reading past postings, there has been a lot of information regarding chateau, but no one seems to mention Saumur. Have you been there, and what were your experiences, or is there a reason that no one mentions it? Has anyone been to the national riding school in the town? Did you stay in town?

Hi Nickie
We stayed just on the outskirts of Saumur last year, and you might find a few comments on the town in my posting, which I called something like Kavey's Diary of the Loire.
I didnt mention the town much as it was a typical and pretty small french Loire town and we didnt spend much time there. We did find plenty of things to see and do within the close environs of Saumur.
We also like Saumur area because it was less immediately touristy than more Eastern areas of the Loire, probably because it hasnt the concentration of chateaux. It does have many to visit but generally the grandest and most popular are further East.
We stayed in the Chateau de Beaulieu which we loved.

Isn't Samur the "sleeping beauty" model castle? I recall it being right at the T in the road, up against the hill across the river as we were in the midst of the Tour d'Tours auto race (unintentionally). We didn't stop in but I understand there are wax models of how the original occupants looked. My guide said they weren't as good as those at Loches. The castle is in the style of the "fortification" chateaus, before they became luxury palaces with more Italinate staircases and relaxed style. Turrents crinolation and moats suggest defense engineering rather than luxury.
