Theft in Poland

We are leaving in 10 days for Poland and we have been reading a lot about their high theft rate. It is even mentioned a lot in the books on Poland for tourists to be very careful. In all of our travels over the course of many years, I was only robbed once in Italy! Anyone who has traveled to Poland recently or at all, could you please let us know your thoughts on the theft situation? I would greatly appreciate any input! I am a city girl, so I am very cautious by nature and I am very alert, but even so, anything is possible.

Thank you!

My limited experience in Poland I found no greater concern for theft than any other area I have been in Europe or for that matter I am more concerned about theft in my own home while I am away. Just take the normal precautions.

Sorry that I cannot help you. There was a classic Eastern Europe Travelogue floating around somewhere on the Web that I thought concerned primarily Poland. It was about a couple very paranoid travelers who thought everyone was out to get them, including all the other passengers on the train. I don't think it would help you, and it is dated, but you might find it interesting if someone else on Fodors can give a link.

I was in Poland last year and echo the sentiments of Eurotraveler, just use your normal precautions and you should be fine. I think there is a problem with pickpocketing in just about every major city. Be extra cautious on the buses, in particular if you are standing/

The only place I've ever been pickpocketed is in my hometown of Chicago, the place where I am the least cautious.

I was beset by gypsies in Warsaw a number of years ago. It's no worse than Rome or Paris. Like it's said here, be careful of pickpockets as in any major city. Also do not leave your luggage unattended for 5 seconds.

Try <www.usinfo.pl> The American Embassy in Warsaw. Practical..Pickpockets operate in gangs of 3. They like to accost passengers getting on to trains. Bury valuables in luggage or under clothing. They also frequent trams near train stations. Same approach..Poland has eliminated some of the gypsy problem. At least they are less prominent. I was robbed by a group of 4 women. I came out of a restaurant and they quickly surrounded me. Then they were gone. I was out a dummy billfold with a few bills. We bought an automobile for travel and since then have had no problems. Beware of small groups or pairs of children! They may grab and run. On the other hand, I have dropped things and always seem to have someone return it or at least call attention to it. Leave nothing visible in automobile. Beggars may station themselves next to ATMs. Find one inside a bank! Some are open 24 hours a day. Access is with card. Tout taxi drivers are working airports and train/bus stations. Polish friend told me that authorities do not consider theft of less than 200 zlotych a crime. Poland is almost a safe place to visit!

Thanks everyone. I have always heard the same thing anywhere I travel. Just be aware of your surroundings and be cautious. We will be on a tour group too this time around, so we'll be in a large group of our own. I love to travel and have always felt comfortable until I was pickpocketed in Italy. Now I am a little more on guard all the time and sometimes it takes away from enjoying my trip when constantly worrying about my money and purse. Any suggestions for mild paranoia? I do use a money belt or neck pouch plus a purse just for make up, tissues, etc. only.
Thanks again!
