http://turismo.regione.veneto.it/ Venice region tourist infor. Remain on the Italian page (the English page will bring you back to the Italian again). Here's your cheat sheet on how to pull up a list of "Alberghi". Under "cerca un albergo nel commune di" (= searching for a hotel in the city of) put in "Venezia" or "Roma" or whatever city you're seeking; under "scegli categoria" (select the category) the number of stars your hotel should have (two or three, etc), then hit "cerca" (=search). You'll find a list of hotels in alphabetical order -it's important to know that all those with "Mestre" as part of the address are situated on the mainland and not on the island of Venice.
After you have selected a hotel, you'll find the address in the upper and the rate in the lower part. The rest is informing you how many rooms the particular hotel has, what languages are spoken, etc. "Singole" means single "doppie" means double-room, "senza bagno" without bathroom, "con bagno" with bathroom. The rates given are minimum-maximum, depending on the season and the location and size of the room.

Thanks so much,
Schnauzer
Just had to reformat my hard drive and lost all my bookmarks - so thanks so much for this!
Thanks Italy06 I added your websites to my list. If any of you have websites that you think are especially good (about just about anthing European Travel) let me know.
I think this is a litte self defense. It takes a lot of surfing to find the ones that actually have the information you need so we need to hang on to the good ones when we find them.
Terrific! Grazie mille.
AWESOME!!!!!!!
Thanks for taking the time to complie, type, and post. You have just helped so many people.

Wow! Unbelievable - thank you so much AisleSeat! I'll add one to your "general" category:
https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/index.html
quick reference for any country.
Well, for some reason this says it's moved, but if you click the link that says The World Factbook it takes you to the correct page.

To continue the Rome list, www.romaturismo.com for downloading brochures on itineraries, restaurants, museums, hotels, etc
I knew you guys would have some good sites to include. Thanks to all past and future contributors.
This is a most fantastic resource - thank you very much!
I like http://www.worldinabag.com for a list of budget accommodations.
Thanks!
Not only do I admire your list, AisleSeat, I'm envious of your screen name. Fabulous choice.
This is great, AisleSeat. Thanks

BTW, I copied AisleSeat's first list and pasted it into a Word doc - the links stay, and when you open the doc later you can click on them to open a new window in your browser.
Now to keep adding to that list all the suggestions from others - a great idea, this post.
Buon viaggio~
I appreciate all of you who have added to the original list... I may have to buy more memory for my computer. My list is pretty weak for certain countries and locations.
Any of you with helpful websites for Amsterdam, Spain, Denmark, Prague, Ireland, etc are welcome to chime in. Thanks!
Woouldn't this be LOTS better on a country-specific basis, similar to the Paris super-thread?
Absolutely! Sort it any way you like or any way that is most useful to you.
Thanks AisleSeat. And I thought I had a long list of bookmarks. How many years have you been gathering these?
Actually, about a week. Almost all of them came from this board. Someone else did all the work for me, all I had to do was format it.
I'd add www.irelandyes.com to the Ireland pages, as well as www.dandooley.com for car rentals.
Also http://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/ for lovely Scotland info.
Thank you for taking the time to put this together! What great info!
BeachGirl
Thank you for the list.
I just found this site:
www.yapta.com
which supposed to help to track your planned trip's fare and let you know when there is a price drop or increase so you can get the fare hopefully at the lowest price. If you've purchased the ticket already, they can even help to give you a refund... But I haven't used that feature yet. Hope someone else had experience with them on that.
I've been tracking flights on yapta the last couple of weeks. It's a great tool, but with some limitations. For instance, your whole itinerary to be tracked needs to be on one airline, and you have to track specific flight numbers - not just any flight on that day. However, it's a great 'check every day' tool
Wow! Thank you!!!
Thanks so much AisleSeat.
Awesome, thanks!
Bookmarking. (Thank you!)
Thank you!

Give me you input. Maybe this belongs on a "websites superthread" as you and I add things to it. How do we do that so everyone can help with it and we can all benefit with the latest information?
I don't know, AisleSeat - if it's to be a European list, this may be the best place for it. Anyone at Fodor's have an idea?
Article in this weekend's NY Times travel section ( http://tinyurl.com/36jqd4 )on online travel planning speaks of a new site to start testing this week. InsideTrip.com is supposed to give lots of extra flight info ...
Thanks for compiling this list. It's proved very useful, especially for Paris sites!
I notice, however, that as yet you don't have anything listed for York (UK). May I suggest the following webite: http://www.debretton.co.uk
It's a portal to several excellent hotels, tourist apartments, and restaurants. I'd particularly recommend one of the hotels they list: Four High Petergate http://www.fourhighpetergate.co.uk
Thanks again,
James
Also, I've also found travel insurance from Insure and Go to be very good value.

Bravo AisleSeat. Thank you very much for this helpful information.
WOW! I am impressed.

Thanks, AisleSeat. EJ

Wow!!! Thanks!
Another budget travel website:
www.hostelworld.com - not just hostels, has tons of reviews, etc. for 1-2 star hotels and B&Bs as well.
Holy Cow Aisle Seat! You get 5 gold stars for all this work, and great job with the categories--easy to look through.
To offer my humble contribution as a thank you, I've used www.booking.com for hotel reservations in Europe and found some cheap rates there.
You must have a lot of free time (LOL)!! Thanks so much. Wonderful effort!
Thanks so much for all your hard work!
What a wonderful resource.
Thanks,

Ok help me out again. I have been adding your suggestions to my master list and a few dozen more sites I have found. What next? Would it be better to just repost the new unbridged-unabridged lisst and let this one drift to the bottom? How will it be more useful to the community?

The german rail site is not www.bahn.de.com, it's just www.bahn.de (& has an English version) useful info for trains all over Europe, gives intermediate stops
That's a fanstaci list! Well done.
To save some money while getting around in Berlin (Germany) I warmly can recommend the Berlin CityTourCard. You can use all public transport services and benefit from the offers of partners in tourism like sightseeing, museums, city tours or city walks, ...
You can buy the Berlin CityTourCard at any ticket counnters and machines of the BVG and S-Bahn, numerous hotels and online under: www.citytourcard.com
According to the card in Berlin there is the Munich CityTourCard. Just browse through the website and have a look!
Wow, great links
But for more practical, i like visit this site :
www.travelis.blogspot.com
you can search, do price comparison and online reservation for flights, hotels, car rentals, cruises & vacation packages in all over the world in a short time.
Wow - so impressed! Can I add, for luxury boutique hotel options:
www.tablethotels.co.uk
www.mrandmrssmith.com
www.i-escape.com
With deep appreciation for the efforts of AisleSeat and others who contributed. Such a valuable resource.
Well played, sir. Well played.
For cheap European flights:
www.germanwings.com is my favorite.
Wow - thanks for this wealth of information and all the work that went into it!
thanks for the info
Thank you! I think a good site is ratestogo.com for last minute (20 days or less) hotels. It worked for great deals at major hotels in Spain last year.
Excellent! Thank you!
Bookmarking for upcoming Paris trip.
Thanks!
Thank you.
This will keep me up 'till the wee small hours.
Bravo. A fabulous list, and much appreciated. Thanks for all the awesome research .
Incredible, AisleSeat, many thanks. LOL OP who asked about your spare time!
I'm not fluent in Fodor posting mechanics but it would be great if you could just add to your current list. This is such an amazing and useful compilation.

We built this up a year ago for God's own county
Yorkshire
Four counties each are very different. They are also called the Ridings.
North is the largest with the lowest density of population contains Richmond and York (with its medieval city walls).
West is the most urbanised with good public transport links and a series of small cities of which Leeds is the largest and wealthiest.
East Yorkshire mainly flat with little of interest apart from cities and towns on the coast. South Yorkshire contains some of the Pennine hill range and the old industrial cities of Sheffield and Rotherham.

My favorite sites for European trains - www.seat61.com; www.budgeteuropetravel.com and www.ricksteves.com. For schedules yes www.bahn.de - the German Railways web site with schedules and details on nearly all European trains.
Two newer handy Paris food websites:
Paris by Mouth - great reviews, discussions, 5 best in various categories (crepes, wine bars, etc.) - www.parisbymouth.com
La Fourchette - discounts and reservations for various Paris restaurants (not all but a good selection) - www.lafourchette.com
Great...thanks.
If you use Priceline to bid for hotels (best value anywhere) then www.biddingfortravel.com , which used to be the best resource for gauging your Priceline bid, has now been put in the shade in many ways, by this new resource:
http://www.biddingtraveler.com/
It looks to me like Priceline itself came up with this very thorough and detailed bidding-reference (though the site gives no hints about its background nor origins); it makes slogging through www.biddingfortravel.com kind of superflous.
The list of direct hotel booking sites also does not have www.bookings.nl which has now made it to the top of the heap.
