The New Stonehenge...
well not new stones but a new visitors center and relocation of a busy road that took some ambiance away from it all - an interesting article in today's NYTimes:

I'm so happy I got to see it on my first trip to the UK - 35 years ago - when you could go right up to the stones - and the sight was (relatively) uncrowded. It's just so fascinating thinking about all of the things it could be.

I was just there in early March. The new visitor center is done very well and the architecture and design is interesting. I found Stonehenge fascinating, but I had done some research before I went and had some knowledge of how it fits into the landscape as a whole. The new museum is done very well and you get a good idea of the history and geography of the site. I felt that the path gets you close enough to the stones and if I were to visit again, I would book and after hours tour inside the circle. It proved to be a great day trip from London via Salisbury and uses the Stonehenge Bus...very easy.

I booked the private sunrise tour where our small group of less than 20 were allowed beyond the barriers to walk among the stones. You could touch them and see them up close. There was a guard to make sure no one did anything that they weren't supposed to do. We were there by ourselves-our group, our guide, the guard and the stones. It was great. There was a light mist. It was so peaceful as the site wasn't officially opened yet. This was in August of 2008. I can still remember how I felt back then.
I'm glad to see things being done to make the experience more enjoyable and informative.
