The Netherlands and Belgium for 2 weeks (family of 5), advice needed!

Jump to last reply

Hello, our family of 5 (kids 16, 17 and 7yrs) is planning on a trip to the Netherlands and Belgium in June for 2 weeks. Both our girls have been on programs with an International organization (CISV) and met some wonderful friends from near Amsterdam which initiated our interest in going. We like hiking, biking, historical sights, some museums ( better if interactive with 7 yr old) beautiful countryside, picnics, walking around exploring etc. And I think the teenage girls would like to shop a little!
Here is what I have come up with so far, we don't want to change where we stay too often with 5 of us so I have concentrated on 3 main places:
1. Amsterdam for 4 nights with at least one day trip to Broek-in-Waterland, Volendam, Monnickendam etc. or Zaanse Schans. We plan to see the Anne Frank House, take a canal boat tour, see the Rijksmuseum, see the Royal Palace square, and walk around Jordaan.
2. Delft for 4 nights. I know it isn't very far from Amsterdam but we wanted to get out of the bigger city, and this is near where the kids' friends are. We thought of day trips to Kinderdijk (is this worth it if we see Zaanse Schans from Amsterdam?), the Hague, Rotterdam, and I would love suggestions for other sights.
3. Bruges for 4 nights: we are interested in biking to Damme, a boat tour, seeing Flanders Fields, and maybe doing a day trip to Ghent (castle of the counts, cathedral, grand square), or Antwerp (read there was a nice zoo for kids there).
4. then we have 2 more days. Not sure what to do. Could stay one more day in Bruges and spend it on a day-trip to the coast? and then the last day in Brussels to fly back to Canada. Or stay one night somewhere in the Netherlands on the way back to Amsterdam and fly out of there. We haven't bought our tickets yet, but when I researched them there doesn't seem too much difference in price flying into Amsterdam and out of Brussels, or Amsterdam round trip.
thanks in advance for any suggestions. We have never been to this area of the world and are very excited to go. After Amsterdam would it be advisable to rent a car?
