The ferry crossed the Mersey and we loved Liverpool~
Liverpool isn't mentioned much here so thought I would post that we had a wonderful visit.
The Magical Mystery Bus Tour was great fun and left us on Mathew Street, where the Cavern Club entertained us the rest of the afternoon.
Milwaukee has the Bronze Fonz and Liverpool has a beautifully sculpted John Lennon:

A tour of Anfield Football Stadium was a highlight, and we also did a city bus tour, courtesy of 2-for-1 offers. (I was pleasantly surprised to see Liverpool vouchers on the London DaysOut site.)
My brother warned me to watch out for street toughs in this "rough city" but I was totally charmed - a lad (or lout) would brush my arm crossing the street and I'd be rewarded with a sweet smile and a "sorry luv."
We couldn't afford to actually see a Liverpool match so settled for an affordable League 2 game - home team lost.
Liverpool proved very walkable and the dock area is fascinating - loved the beauty of the Three Graces and they proved a reliable landmark for navigation.
Given how many places there are on our wish list, I don't know that we will return to Merseyside but I'm grateful for the days we had there.
These lyrics often sprang to mind that visit:

We were in Liverpool about 4 or so years ago, and really liked it. Our goal was to see the Victorian art in the Walker Art Gallery and visit the Lady Lever Gallery and drive around Port Sunlight. After that, everything was a bonus.
We had a great meal, enjoyed the port and the great walking and shopping streets, and the Cavern Club too.
I'm all for Liverpool. Stayed two nights and enjoyed every minute.

I assume your brother knows little of Liverpool.
As far as visitors are concerned, there are no street toughs in Liverpool. What possible point would there be these days in picking a fight with, or stealing from, some woolyback? There's no street cred to be gained - and theft just increases the likelihood of trouble from the busies.
For the past few hundred years, Liverpool has had a reasonably violent history: fighting against other sects, other races, other classes and almost anyone representing authority has been part of the city's way of life. Robbing unsuspecting migrants (most North Americans of European stock are descended, Mersey legend claims, from people whose transatlantic voyage started in Liverpool) was part of that tradition.
Today, that aggression is reserved for fellow-citizens and visiting football supporters. There's far more to be made from other visitors by playing the adorable friendly Scouser.
An insight so bleeding obvious, most of the stupider English (nowhere else in England do minds work so fast) constantly fail to grasp it. Which is why these fatheaded myths persist.

Everything my brother knows about Liverpool he learned from his Irish in-laws.
Who have never been there either.
Actually his worry more concerned football hooliganism, when I first told him that we'd like to watch Liverpool play, but the Tranmere match was quite sedate.
We did have a bit of trouble with the rapid, syllable compressed speech. A cab driver asked us something unintelligible and we said "pardon?" He laughed and said, "that's what I was asking - if you had trouble understanding us!"

You read similar stuff on here about Glasgow. It's embarrassingly ignorant and causes people to side step amazingly vibrant culture filled cities and head, instead, to souless tourist ghettos. More fool them.

The violent anything-for-a-fight football hooliganism of the 1970s and 80s seems to have been policed/educated/priced out of most grounds. What seems to be more reported on now is the verbal hostilities of supporters' chants, where the line between banter and bullying abuse is all too variable.

Liverpool is one place I hope to visit soon and I was especially happy to see that there are 2 FOR 1 offers possible there too.
