TGV Paris to Berne (CH) how often, when?

Since my last post I have been researching Paris and have already fallen in love with it, but .....

I would like to catch a train from Paris to Berne Switzerland. I'm hoping someone can confirm my reading of TGV schedule.

When I look at the TGV site I can see is only one direct train which arrives at 22:30 (10:30pm). This time is not appealing to me. I'm looking within the 90 day period even though I would actually be wishing to travel in July. I thought I would check with the more experienced Fodorites before I opt for Paris to Zurich instead. I know how to get from Zurich to Bern.

Also would mid to late July be OK in Switzerland? Best to leave before their National Holiday or be there for the excitement?
Thanks all

You could also check TGV schedules to Basel and transfer for a train to Bern.

Thanks Michael. I had also looked at that. I think I have a (possibly unreasonable) prejudice against Basel. Of all the places I visited in Switzerland, Basel was the only place I did not enjoy. I may decide to work on myself and get over it!

I'm not suggesting that you visit Basel, just transfer trains; and I'm sure that Swiss trains between Basel and Bern are quite frequent.

Paris - Bern, there is only 1 TGV ( direct) train. There used to be 2, one in am and another in pm but they reduced it to one when they increased the number of TGV to Basel - Zurich. So Michael's suggestion is a good one. For the same reason, you could consider TGV Paris - Lausanne and transfer Lausanne to Bern. Both Basel and Bern are about 1hr to Bern and eaqually frequent.

Thanks Michael
I agree that trains Basel to Bern are quite frequent. I have a feeling though that I would find the transfer easier at Zurich rather than Basel (for me that is). I shall investigate it more thoroughly though.
<kappa1> You have cleared something up for me. I had read somewhere there were two. Now I understand that it has reduced to one. I had also noticed the Lausanne option.
I guess I feel more comfortable with a change at Zurich.
I shall make my choice with reference to ease of transfer.
Thanks all for your info.

Yes, whichever is most comfortable for you.

However you do know, don't you, that all the TGV trains to Zurich stop at Basel, meaning you would give 1 extra hour ( BSL-ZRH) to finally arrive in Bern ( BSL - BRN and ZRH - BRN is abou the same, 1 hour) ?

If you choose to take the train for Berne in Zurich and not in Basel, that is.
