We are traveling in less than a month through Gatwick, then on to Fiumincino, and out of Galileo(sp?)in Pisa. Any trouble lately at these airports, or major delays?? I'm traveling with 2 kids, age 12 and 14, and a pain in the arse husband(at times...not that the kids aren't enough trouble!), and I'm hoping for smooth sailing!

I flew JFK-Rome last month, spending 10 days in Rome. No delays at all, very smooth, IMO. (When in Fiumincino, look up & see armed soldiers on the catwalk. If anyone dared to pull anything, including a prank, I'd hate to have to be at the mercy of these attentive armed soldiers!)
Buon Viaggio,
BC

I flew in and out of Heathrew(twice),Getwick and Venice Marco Polo airport since Septembe 11 without any problem. The only delay was in Venice, for some unknown reason, passengers were kept in the shuttle bus next to the plane for near an hour, while police and police dogs went up and down the plane.

We flew to Pisa in late Oct. My wife was searched 3 times. Seems she had a small address book with a magnet embedded into the closing mechanism and security had a hard time deciding what it was. She was searched 3 times. Pisa is a fairly small airport. Has an ATM, taxi and bus service. We saw very few Americans in Oct. The hotels we stayed at told us they has lost about 40% of their advance bookings since Sept 11th. One more point. If you are flying to Pisa and want to rent a car, it's much cheaper to take the train to Lucca and rent it there. No airport surcharges. It saved us almost $175 for a 10 day rental.

I went in Italy in October. I arrivied in Fiumicino at 6 or 7am, and it was like we were the only people in the airport. It was totally empty. I'm not sure if that was the time of day or an indication of the lapse in tourism. Needless to say, it was smooth sailing. There was still a bit of a wait with everyone else on my flight. I flew out of Peretola, not Pisa, and connected in Milan. This was in the middle of the day and the airports were more crowded, but there were no problems.
