Telephones in the B&B Peterson in Florence
By email, I received a rate of 41 Euros per night for a room with a shared bath for my stay from December 31 - January 4.
If my family could phone me at the telephone in the room, this might be preferable to the other budget options I have considered which do not have in-room telephones.
But I've also read that the owners do not live at the B&B, so I was wondering how it is possible to route telephone calls to the room.
I'm hoping Ira or anyone else who has stayed here can comment. Are there any impediments to receiving telephone calls while in one's room? Or for that matter how expensive is it to make telephone calls from one's room (using a telephone card purchased at a local store)?

Wait a second, that's the rate for the B&B Cassia, which they also own, and which is 150 meters from the B&B Peterson.
Can anyone comment on the quality of the B&B Cassia?

We recently stayed at B&B Cassia and liked it very much. There was no telephone in our room. There may have been one out in the "office area" in the hallway, but no one is on site to answer it. You can see more info about B&B Cassia on our trip report. If it's very important for you to talk to your family by phone, you may want to consider getting or renting a cell phone that works in Europe (called mobile phones). Calls from hotel room phones are typically very expensive. Phone cards can be purchased for public payphones, but do not typically work in more than one country. My impression was that everyone in Italy, even the statues, talks nonstop on their mobiles!

Thanks for the tips Ira and lesliec.
I'm going to be in Italy for almost all of my trip, so it will be convenient to get a phone card and then use it from a pay phone. I've purchased phone cards in all the other countries I have visited and they worked fine.
I might just activate my current cell phone so it can take calls when I am overseas. Apparently that's possible at some price. That said, I really don't particularly like talking on a cell phone.
I never use a hotel room phone to call out, after a bad and expensive experience in California where the charge was misrepresented. I've been terrified ever since.
My husband does like it when I have a telephone line in my hotel room, because with the calling cards he purchases at home in Canada, he can easily talk to me for an hour or so for the cost of a couple dollars. I somehow doubt I could get the same deal with any cell phone plan.
