We'd like to go tea with our children in London without the high prices. Just tea and scones would be great, in a pleasant setting. I've read that the Orangery (sp?) is very inexpensive. Does anyone recommend it or have any other favorite spots?

Well - it isn't "very" inexpensive - but it is much cheaper than most of the hotel afternoon teas. It is a great place if you are at that the west end of the park. How old are the kids - if they are little, the memorial playground is right next door to the Orangery.

But you can have tea/scones/cakes just about anywhere including the restaurants/cafes in most of the museums/galleries,

I agree with janis. It's hard finding a place that doesn't serve tea and scones.

The Fountain on the ground floor of Fortnum and Mason's is pleasant, they have other kinds of food and desserts besides just a tea menu, and the scones are pretty good.

Perhaps you could try the "Inn the ParK" cafe in St.James Park: good tea and traditional English sweets(and breakfast), simple setting with indoor/outdoor tables among flowering shrubs, facing the ponds with water fowls and pelicans. The price is quite reasonable too. Besides, there are many most tame squirrels around.
