taxi in rome

Hey Folks,
Could someone tell me how much a taxi from Termini to the Spanish Steps area would cost? All I've been told is "a lot." Questa costa a lot in Italy? We'll be geting into the station around midnight and probably won't feel like figuring out mass transit at that time. Thanks.

If it's more than 10 euros start screaming for a cop.Should be about 7 unless there is a traffic jam.

Misty:

I took a cab from Termini to the top of the Spanish steps a few weeks ago. Paid 8 &euro, two suitcases included.

Just make sure you join the oficial line in front of Termini station and DO NOT let yourself be tempted by anyone offering "cheap rates".

Taxis in Rome are white with logos on the sides. Meters are compulsory.

Enjoy your trip

Phil.

Can somebody explain taxi meters, i.e. what are the two different sets of numbers all about. I never seen to know which one is the amount and what the other one would be. Never seen to know if I am being cheated or not.

Sandy:

The other set of numbers is the time. taxi tariffs in itay are calculated by time and not by legth of the travel (seconds and not meters). Beside these, some meters also display the code of the tariff (daytime, nightime, festivity, etc.).

Thanks for all your information. Now I'm kicking myself for buying the train ticket for the shuttle from the FCO to Termini. I bet it would have been cheaper to take a taxi for that little trip, too. But, hey, I am looking forward to trying out the wacky world of Italian mass transit. Thanks again.
