I can't tell you how much the taxi fare is, but the cathedral's treasury is worth the trip. It's the most impressive collection of medieval religous art that I've seen.

Sorry, don't know the cost. The train takes a little over an hour between the two cities with one connection. I imagine the cost of a taxi from one to another would be rather pricey.

I understand there is a direct "intercity" bus that runs from the train station in Maastricht to central Aachen. Does anyone know about this: how often does it run and the cost?

How nice to see that someone's going to Aachen--fascinating city. Don't miss the great specialty in the bakeries: gingerbread.

equinox: There is a bus that runs from Maastricht train station to Aachen city center. I used it a few times in fall 2004. I believe it was around 4,60 euro each way and it took about an hour. It was about half price of what the train cost, if I remember correctly. Also, with the train, you need to transfer somewhere (Heerlen maybe?) so it really isn't that much faster.

A couple of years ago, I was driven from Eindhoven to Aachen and the cost was 200 euros (I wasn't paying)...so it wouldn't be a cheap fare to go from Maastricht to Aachen. The bus or train options are much better.
The area immediately around the cathedral is quite nice. When we are in Aachen, we usually have lunch at the Rose am Dom, a restaurant nearby in a building that (partially) dates back to the mid 1300s.

A bus-shuttle connects Aachen with Maastricht airport. The price is 10€.

You can find all relevant information via the official airport internet page.
